What set of spare Steel Wheels?

    Hi All,

I am looking for a set of spare steel wheels to use on my jeep. My stockers are only 4.5" wide, and it is nearly impossible to find a decent off road tire for this size so I plan on going to a 15x7 or 15x8 wheel. I am putting a set of 30.5x9.5R15 BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO's on the vehicle, as they are larger yet have good road life. What would be better, and what style should I go for? Also, because this is a spare set of wheels, originality is not needed, and I am mainly looking for lower cost.
    Thanks

    Dan

With that size I'd recommend the 15x7 wheels. If looking for cheap, white spokes steel wheels from Craigslist (used) are typically cheap and fairly readily available. New are fairly inexpensive as well.

You can buy new spoke wheels for about $40 each. Then you can pick your diameter, finish, width and offset.

The price of steel has gone up quite a bit and new ones with either tax or shipping are probably gonna be at least $240.

Tire shop played hell mounting my 33x 9.50s on 7" wheels. From new, the width between the sidewalls at the bead area was real skinny. Not sure but, a 6" wide rim might be an option, if you can find one.

Where would you suggest getting these wheels at? I was having this in mind, that I need a correct offset so the vehicle would not look ridiculous.
    Thanks

Discount Tire told me that 30x9.5x15 tires will fit the Samurai rims. The Samurai rims will fit the hubs on early CJ's.

I got my wheels from Summit Racing.

The orignal backspacing is around 3.5". You will find lots of wheels with 3.5" or 3.75" backspacing. I'm running wheels with 2.5" backspacing, but of course they stick out 1" further on each side.

Does anybody have any pictures of wheels that consist of 3.5" or 3.75" backspacing? How far off does it look versus stock? I don't have my vehicle with me so I can't really measure, but I really don't want the wheels sticking out past the fenders.
    Thanks

3.75 is stock????? These front are 8 inch with a 10 inch tire...yes they stick out. To not stick out, probably don't want to go past a 215 75R 15 on the 8 inch, or 205 75R 15 on the 7 inch.

"I am mainly looking for lower cost."

Friend of mine bought cheap wheels from a discount parts chain. The tire shop refused to mount tires because the wheels were significantly out-of-round, couldn't balance them.

Yeah, that looks right. My factory wheels are 6" wide with a 3.5" - 3.75" backspacing (I'd have to measure again - I think it's 3.75"). An 8" wheel with the same BS will stick out 2" further than stock. I run flares with 7" wheels and 2.5" BS. - I know my Jeep would not pass inspection without them.

Just make sure they have the large center hole or won't fit over the front hubs.

Ford F1 and F100 half-ton from the 50's, 60's and early 70's. International Harvester from the same periods. They all have the same bolt pattern and the same center hole size.
Wheels for the Samurai are the same bolt pattern and center hole size. Maybe the SideKicks too.

The rims for my 2005 Dodge Dakota have the same bolt pattern but not the same center hole. 2 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive may have the right center section for this application.

Okay, so would a set of 15x7's with some 30x9.5x15 BF Goodrich's look/work good? I don't mind if they stick over slightly to be honest, it is honestly just that I am often surrounded by jeeps with completely horrid extrusion on each side. Considering the entire vehicle is stock, I am really just looking for an off road tread so I don't ruin the vehicle with a set of road tires

They did on my '60. And when I get the spare cash for them the 30x9.5's will go back on the '60.

Okay guys, thanks for all the help! I ended up going with some Cragar style 15x7 wheels and 30x9.5x15 tires. I am excited to have them mounted and balanced and then I will post a picture once it is on the jeep. Thanks!
