Eying my first CJ, need help id'ing the drivetrain

    Had a lifted 2 door xj for years, but got rid of it for whatever reason. Looking to get back into jeeping with an early CJ. Found a 1956 Willys CJ5 with a Buick V6 replacement engine in it. I could use some help IDing everything from teh engine back. It's got a twin stick transfer case with some kind of OD on it, so I'm thinking i've got a T90 going to a Spicer18. These photos support that?
    This one concerns me, is that typical of an engine swap or is that open housing asking for trouble?

    The first picture is of a bell-housing that I am not familiar with? The second pic looks like it could be a T-90 type tranny and the third is definitely a Spicer/Dana 18 with an overdrive.

    Bellhousing is a typical later model car BOP bellhousing. I have one on my '59-5. No issues. There was a sheet metal inspection cover. Easy enough to fabricate. Possible T-90 but hard to tell from the pic.

    looks like an T86 or T90, But what the hell do I know? I'm new here.

    Should be cast on it if you look around. If not you can always pull the top and count the teeth.

    The T90 transmission is 9" long and features a cast iron top cover that is retained by six bolts and a main case of cast iron. The case itself has a prominent bulge on the driver's side with two protruding bosses as provisions for side-shifting actuators.

    All T90 transmissions have a 1-3/8" x 6 spline output shaft for mounting the transfer case input gear.
    Jeeps also had a T86 transmission that appears similar to the T90. Many parts interchange, however first & reverse gears are helically cut in the T86 in lieu of the spur cut gears in the T90.
    There are three major versions of the T90 to differentiate.
    T90A1
    The T90 used from 1946 to 1962 with the L and F-head four-cylinder engines is designated as the T90A1. These versions all feature top shifters, a 7" input shaft (stick-out length) with 15/16" x 10 splines and a felt-sealed front bearing retainer assembly. The input shaft has an 18 tooth, helically cut input gear. The cluster gear has a 33 tooth driven gear, resulting in a 2.79:1 first gear and a 1.55:1 second gear.

    T90C
    The T90 used from used from 1963 to 1971 with the F-head four-cylinder engine is designated as the T90C. It features top shifters, a 7" input shaft (stick-out length) with 15/16" x 10 splines and a felt-sealed front bearing retainer assembly. Since the T90C uses a case marked "T90A", you will need assurance that the transmission in question came from a post-'62 Jeep, or you will need to pull the top cover and count teeth. The T90C has a 16 tooth, helically cut input gear. The cluster gear has a 35 tooth driven gear, resulting in a 3.34:1 first gear and a 1.85:1 second gear.

    T90J
    The T90J was used with the six-cylinder trucks from 1952 to 1965. These were either column or floor shift models. They had an ~9-1/4" input shaft (stick-out length) with a 10 x 1-1/8" splines and a neoprene-sealed front bearing retainer assembly. The T90J has an 18 tooth, helically cut input gear. The cluster gear has a 33 tooth driven gear, resulting in a 2.79:1 first gear and a 1.66:1 second gear.

    Your third picture (when it started to rain) shows the pan for the D18 (spicer) transfercase with an overdrive unit at the top right of the picture (with the red label) and at bottom right is the transfercase mounted parking brake drum. And do you have 3 or 4 forward gears without touching the overdrive lever?

    Most likely the T90, unless the PO changed that along with the engine.

    Still haven't found the model number on the transmission, but it does have the 2 side shifter bosses on the site, so seems safe to assume it's a t-90. The overdrive still has the original Warn all range overdrive sticker on it, so that's cool. She's got a holley 390 on the 225 engine. Going to have that tuned up this week, currently dies at idle unless I keep on the gas.

    Hanging pedals, looks like a GM title column. Probably has a saginaw power steering box on the front frame ral also. Good upgrades. The overdrives are worth some coin. Looks like a good vehicle for the price. Do you have disc brakes on the front? If yes, probably had a later CJ D30 upgrade. Looking at the driver's side hub, that may be a possibility.

    It's a late 80's Cadillac column and wheel, good eye. Although the steering wheel is probably my least favorite thing about the truck, it's a hideous red and has quite a bit of fore/aft slop. Pretty sure it's still drums in the corners, original front axle assembly, I THINK.

    Drove it to work today, no problems other than dying at idle thanks to some needed carb work.
