For those who love to play "What year is it" What year is this cj5?

Found this in the woods of northern MI nearby some property my wife and I just bought. thinking of asking the neighbor if I can take it off their hands. I am a flatty owner so this is un familiar to me. I think its early and it has a buick v6. What axles are these? is the rear one center differential ( I failed to notice) I could possibly use the back axle for the flatty if its a centered d44 or I maybe toss the body and restore it. What say ye?

Total guess here but I think it’s a ’66.
You’ve got the old windshield, short front fenders and under seat gas tank that all make it fairly old but it also has the V-6 and '66 was the first year for them.
Axles look to me like a Dana 25 and offset Dana 44.

 

Looks to have the newer Jeep logo stamped in the body?

 

I'd also say late '65, '66, or '67 for the reasons mentioned above. Looks to be 10" brakes also. Front looks like a 27 to me as the vent is not in the cover like a 25.

JEEP stamped logo -- late 60s to early 70s
Orange turn signals, sort of pointy -- 60s i think
No cover or support between front of frame -- pre 72
Rear view mirror is squareish, arm is very straight -- post 71 for mirror, pre 71 for arm
Hinge and metal along windshield, setup for hard top.
Glare makes it hard to tell, gas tank under seat -- pre mid 70
Fender flare has recess for side marker, no hole for light -- pre mid 70
No reflector on hood near latch -- pre and post early 70, early 1970 is the only one that I have ever seen a reflector on the hood, on jeepsters mostly

long neck gas tank under seat -- pre mid 60s, 3B?
rear reflector -- 70ish
steering column -- pre 72ish
seats are spring loaded -- pre late 60s/early 70s
paint looks original, roll bar same color -- post 71?

where is the battery tray?
where is the heater and core?
is there a hood latch on the center behind the grill?
Straight and thick grill supports -- post 70 (not sure about this)

Wheels on this side are post 71 wagon wheel style
Air cleaner is paper filter version -- post mid 70

dashboard looks like pre 70
light switches look pre 70
bonus gauge on left, looks like add on to me
steering mounted to bottom of dash -- pre 72ish
heater controls are not familiar to me, look older
transfercase single shift lever is strange unless it is pulled forward, then it could be a d18 single stick -- post 69ish
where is the wiper motor?
where are the wipers?
windshield looks pre lower wipers
tail gate looks post 72
tail lights are wrong, but maybe not for the new gate.
no tire mounting on right rear -- post mid 70

can't make out closed or open steering at wheel.

I think it is a frankenjeep!
Looks to me like it could be mid 70 to 72 if it is not a pieced together unit.
Kaiser was probably using all of the spare parts that were left before the AMC take over in Feb 70.
Where is the exhaust routed, driver side or across the back to the passenger side?

body is mid 70 or 71 -- based on the fender reflectors instead of lights.

Tub is a true AMC, 72-75 intermediate. This is a frankenjeep.
Text on body is a give away as is the recess for the marker on the passenger rear.

I agree with Mcruff-intermediate CJ tub on an earlier chassis.
And unfortunately it appears to have been sitting there for a long time-probably not much left of any value.

 

You can narrow down the tub year even more. The Jeep script in that location was introduced in mid 1974. Almost everything changed in 1976; I believe the bow pockets went away, and the floors and dash changed a lot for 1976. So it's a '74 or '75 tub.

 

you Guys are good, thanks for the feed back. I know the tub is junk, the frame, even the suspension and drive train dont look too bad, better than my flatty when I restored that. Im looking to get an early cj5 and modify very little. Considering the year of the chassis, motor and drive train, do you think it would be worth the time and money to restore this thing? At what point do you say its not worth the trouble?

 

To me restoring a vehicle, gun , whatever means theres enough good original parts left to restore. In this case which would you restore it too ? the 70's tub or 60,s frame/ drive train, was it even an original v6? I would say this is not restorable.

 

How much is your time worth?

There may be some good parts there... but I suggest you don't give any more than a token payment for it. I wouldn't take it if they paid me. JMO.

 

Probly gonna get it for free. I would restore it to same era as the chassis. As suggested, maybe it will make a good parts jeep.

 

Looks like the hoods been up foe a while-so the engine is probably locked up due to rust-ditto the trans, water can get in thru the shifter. Tcase might be good, and rear axle. IMO you'd be money and time ahead to find a more complete Jeep for a couple grand and just use that one for parts.

 

Free Jeeps always seem to be the most expensive.
