I'm in Australia and have just imported a 1960 CJ5 to add to my collection. We were pretty gobsmacked to find that it arrived without a hand brake!
On inspection I found that the drum was on the rear of the transfer case and had a short piece of cable going to the cross member but someone? had used a bolt cutter and cut the cable right there.
There is no hardware of any other sort on the body.

Never having owned a CJ5 before I don't know if it has a handle or a foot pedal or even where it goes and how it attaches. Is it situated on the left or right of the steering column?:?

Who (which company), would be able to supply me with all the necessary parts to put it back together?

I'd hate to think what would happen to someone who got caught driving a vehicle in Australia without a functioning handbrake. If they didn't lock you up they'd probably seize your Jeep!

Factory is a handle mounted under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Not sure if anyone offers it aftermarket. Someone here may have one to sell. Check epay, too. Maybe someone has a pic they can post up for you.

Thank you wheelie. It's a great help. So, now I need a photo or two and somewhere to find it. Do you know if it's the same as the M38A1?

the M38A1 is very different, the components clamp to the outside of the drum
here is the cj5 set up, sorry the pics are a little large, they were uploaded several years ago and convenient.
lever on the far left of the dash
    [IMG]
connects to a cable within this housing
    [IMG]
housing ends at the transmission crossmember and the cable pulls on the lever on the transfercase
    [IMG]
the lever spreads the brake shoes within the drum

I'd go with 11" brakes and a foot pedal, like the newer Jeeps. The 11" brakes have a much more effective parking brake that acts on the wheel brakes rather than on the transfer case. Transfer cases on these vehicles seem to leak universally (universally :D) and the parking brake becomes oil soaked and ineffective quickly.

R&P sells kits for the 11" brakes, and the same Bendix 11"x2" brakes from many many vehicles can be modified to work. It's a great upgrade from the relatively ineffective 9" OEM brakes. Be aware that some early Jeep wheels will not fit over the 11" brake drums.

What Tim said. That's the route going when I get around to it. Tired of that t/case mounted set up. Leaky, low hanging, and mine doesn't work very well. Not to say they can't work. Keeping them dry has always been my problem as it has been for scads of others.

Thanks for the suggestion timgr. Being an Australian I am not familiar with the shortening of business names into initials. Would you mind telling me who R&P are? If you have time.

    Welcome from the states!

Just a heads up, check out their rear disc brake conversion with parking brake as well. It's listed on their web site. R&P actually stands for Richard and Paul, the two guys who started the business about 21/22 ish years ago and still currently own the business.

Transfer case brake can work extremely well - IF it is set up and adjusted correctly, and the output shaft seals are not too leaky.

You imported a '60. From where, and is the steering wheel on the left, like in the US or the right like England and you guys are?
It would probably make a difference on where the T-handle for the parking brake ends up. I would be after putting in the system from the M38A1 which puts it on the floor between the seats, I believe.
