Went out a couple of weeks back and remembered to put the windshield down. What a difference, if you're not wheeling with the windshield down you're missing half the ride. I've acquired some goggles and am interested in knowing how fast I can go with the windshield strapped down using the provided points at the center of the hood/windshield frame. I have an OD an zip along on the highways at 55MPH all the time. Does anyone here have any practical experience at speeds over 30MPH

as long as the hood is latched & the windshield is strapped tight to the hood, you will have no problems.

My hood strap looks like this, but with a metal clasp:

My '5 tops out at about 60, too. So never had a problem with it, except once when I forgot to latch down the hood (the windshield was strapped to it). I've had my CJ-7 doing 80+, for 100 miles, with the windshield down.

Note on Eyewear- ideally have something with polycarbonate lenses. Sunglasses are OK. The best ones I find are the ones that actually touch along the entire browline & down the nose. As long as you have that seal, you'll get very little tearing.

My personal favorite is the RayBan Wayfarer. I have a few pairs-- including a set with clear lenses for driving at night.

if the dust is not a problem I always drop the windshield.....I don't trust the strap , I mounted the bikini top to the roll bar just so I can drop the w/s. I have the metal latch that holds the passenger flip seat and a tall U on the hood , I have gone as fast as little Sway will go with goggles and the right foot hitting the metal floorboard.

You'd get pulled over in PA. State inspection stickers are on the windshield and are t be clearly visible at all times. AMHIK. But, 9 times out of 10, when I hit the dirt, the windshield comes down first, then the air pressure. It's a great experience. Wish it was as easy to do on the new jeeps as it is on the old JEEPs.

I have a friend coming in from the UK so I asked him to pick up a pair w/poly lenses and smoke poly lenses. Unlike the ones available here in the states these are leather not vinyl and are less expensive http://davida.co.uk/styles.php?id=8

I feel way more comfortable heading out onto the local road system knowing that the wind that gets scooped up by the windshield is vented. Thanks for the advice.

My windshield is always down off pavement. It's the better part of the experience. I find there is less dust as a free flow of air moves over the tub. A windshield in the upright position creates turbulence and picks up dust coming off the rear of the jeep.

I generally offroad alone or with a small group. We maintain contact via radio and space ourselves for "dust distance" depending on conditions.
