sending unit and gas tank woes...

    okay, so my current gas tank is shot and its the v6 gas tank, with the older 6 screw style sending unit (I believe it still works)


    Im about ready to buy a gas tank that is the lock style, and wondering if I can use it? I found a sending unit for the lock style but its showing two lines that I have no clue what they do? http://www.kaiserwillys.com/product/2603/willys-jeep-fuel-sending-units-parts-accessories


    I take it there is no adapter to use my old sending unit correct?

    in addition I imagine having a shop put in a return line is no big deal, Im just trying to figure out if its worth my time or should I just pick up the right tank if i can find the V6 one.

    The fuel pump on my 67 had only one fuel line when I got it. I added the return line when I installed the fuel tank. I found the fuel pump return line had a rubber cap with a hose clamp. I took that off and routed the fuel line along with the other one. I used a rubber fuel line. The Jeep didn't run any different but I did like having it hooked up like the factory V-6 I had in my 71.

    I used an OMIX tank and sending unit with screws. There is only one line there so I added a bung and fitting for the return hose on top of the tank. It is very simple. If it wasn't I wouldn't have been able to do it.

    There is one wire to the fuel gauge. I also added an external ground wire to one of the mounting screws on the sending unit to make sure the gauge worked.

    Not sure on some of the things you are asking. I do know if the old tank does not have a return line/ then running one will not be super easy, as fuel pump must have a factory nipple the fuel return. Just cover up the return nipple on the sending unit will work well. If not you need to update the fuel pump as well with a return system. Do not drill the new tank my thoughts. Use the proper unit for the tank you are buying.

    Return system is to prevent vapor lock keep the fuel cool.

    My understanding is there are two styles of under seat tanks. The style that uses six screws and the style with the lock ring. I highly doubt the sending units are interchangeable. You need to match the sending unit to the gauge and the tank you are using.

    thank you all, (sorry if I worded my questions badly)

    I think it would be wise just get the right tank so I don't have to reroute tank lines, new sending unit ext..

    I took a new 5 or 6 screw fuel tank, and had my friend at his sheet metal shop cut the locking ring and some surrounding metal out of the old tank and weld into the new tank. It looks good
