Nick's work in progress. (fixing some PO junk)

    Hey guys,

    This is going to more or less be a build thread for my Jeep.

    I hadn't planned to really touch it until I could afford a full restoration.

    Well, things changed, I ended up having to more to an apartment with a one car garage.

    Now here I am fixing the PO's "work"


    Here's what got me started. The rear tub mounts had pretty much rotted out, so the PO did a horrendous bondo job, and called it good. Not so good, the mounts slowly began to pull out of the tub.

    So, I pulled off the taillights, and began to rebuild those while I waited for the chance to take it to a buddies and have him weld in new metal.


    Well, pulling off the taillights didn't go so well. The nuts were rusted to the studs/bolts, and sheared off under the torque. So out came the dremel, and slice, they were off.

    But in the process, I wasn't paying attention and sliced the wires! mehh
    No big deal, they were really short anyway. Except, where do I find these things?

    That's got me stumped. In the mean time, I sanded and repainted the buckets, and had some of the welding done.

    The work never ends. R)

    Should be able to find the contact/wire at most good parts stores. They are considered repair parts. Napa and the like should have them or be able to get them.

    Is that bondo I see that was squished threw the hole to the left there?

    You can solder up a contact wire if you don't find an off-the-shelf pig tail. Just spread the wire stands evenly at right angle and solder. Trim/file the remaining strand ends to adequately clear the fixture. Some vehicles around the ranch I did that to 30 years ago and have had no problems.

    Yes, the mount had completely rotted through and he bonded it.

    When the bondo was ground off, there were only the factory tack welds at the edge of the brackets left holding the body up.


    I tried two of my FLAPS, but both didn't carry anything that would work. Napa is the only real place to find anything around these parts, I'll try there.

    I have some length of solid core wire, do you think that could possibly be used?

    Nope you need stranded. Google for the pigtails. There avail but I can't remember who has them.

    Know you don't want to spend much money on this, but the taillight appears to be a generic trailer lights, not original to your JEEP.
    Looks like a driver's side with the clear lense painted black. I would be shopping for some replacements, and not hassle with the pigtails or broken studs.

    I actually saw some generic lights that looked the same a my local FLAPS not too long ago.

    If I had known when I started with the tail lights, I probably would have done that. I need to upload pictures, but the lights are already sanded, painted and holes for new bolts have been drilled. That being said, I'll just get replacement pigtails.


    Thanks for the part number!! I'll go check on these later this week.

    I'm also due for an oil change, haven't checked the trans or t case fluid in 2,000 miles, I'll be doing that this weekend too, the :smash: never ends!

    Still need to find my camera and post the rest of the pics, and take a couple more of what happened today.

    Started the Jeep and backed out of the garage. I smelled gas, so I popped the hood to take a peek.

    Gas was literally pouring out of one of the connections into the fuel filter and onto the fender, turns out the hose wasn't cut straight. So the hose didn't fit right, and the clamp was loose. :rofl:

    Finally got to my oil change today.

    The oil looked good when I checked it out, but when I drained the oil, it was nasty, like it was a couple thousand miles overdue. :rofl:
    So I pulled all the bolts on the oil pan, but this dang thing won't come off!!

    Finally got the pan off earlier today, little residue, nothing abnormal, cleaned it up and put it back on.

    Got all but the last 4 bolts on.

    The last ones all have beat threads, looks like they were cross threaded.
    Been looking online for some oil pan bolts that will fit (that I can pick up at my LAPS) with no luck.
    I think this :smash: is going to be my most used emoticon on the forum for a while...

    Oil pan dropped, no sludge, oil changed, pressure now at 25 psi at idle when hot. :stout:
    Next up, I'm gonna try timing the engine, it's really off and shaking at idle a lot.
    Then hopefully next weekend my buddy will finish the welding!

    Well, I'm still at work trying to get everything in shape for wheeling at calico ghost town next weekend.

    Added fluid to the transmission and transfer case (transmission took a lot of gear oil :oops:).

    Changed out oil on air cleaner and figured out why the choke doesn't work (worn out springs and linkage.)

    Then, while trying to get the rod on top of the carb (that the air cleaner attaches to) to stay still, my friend dropped a nut down the carb!

    mehh

    So tomorrow comes pics of my chewed up carb, and hopefully we can get this nut out without tearing too much apart.

    Sunpro oil pressure gauge keeps bouncing around....maybe need a new pressure sender?

    Once I get paid this week, new starter, plug wires, and a carb rebuild kit!

    Ok, bills came in the way.

    Bought some parts from a forum member, getting new wires friday, hopefully a cap, rotor, and points as well. Maybe an oil pressure sender as well.

    I found a diagram for the sparkplug wires, is this accurate?? If so, my wires are a heck of a mess, no wonder it wont run.

    It looks correct, however I can't find FSM to confirm.

    Also, as I found out recently they wires can be moved around on the cap as long as you put them in right order according to distributor.

    Thanks! I recently visited forum member supertrooper's place and took pics of his wiring on his cap, I just wanted to make sure I was correct in seeing that they are the same. I'm hoping to make it to FLAPS sat and finally get this heep on the road.

    Finally sounds like it's firing properly. FLAPS tomorrow.
