    For your consideration...
Following the recommendations from another site, I cleaned a couple of valve spring compressors using "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. $2 at the Dollar store. They soaked in full strength TBC for about 12 minutes, and here are the results. Very caustic fumes, but did a great job. The New Britan tool had some flaking CAD plating on it and this was removed. They work as smoothly as they are clean. I was impressed. Its definately quicker than electrolisys & I'll try it on more old, greasy parts. Whatcha think??

Cool! I'll have to try it out. I use an old crock pot with "awesome" mixed with water for degreasing small parts. Works good.

I'm more interested in some of the other photos there! Such as the M1919 and M2, and that M38A1 in the crate. Details?

I've got a Paull's Leader cold blast kerosene lantern coming up next... pertty rusty all over, but sound. This may be a good way to prep it for paint.
    Thanks!

(BTW, same lantern case I've been using since about 1988 when I picked up a used lantern w/case...)

    Rondog,
The MB I have is a true - wartime jeep and entered the MTO is Italy. I found some hand-drawn (but accurate) plans for a dummy M2HB on the G503 site. Since I consider the machine gun - the ultimate "Jeep accessory", I made one from those plans. It turned out pretty well but I sold it to a GPW owner to mount on his jeep. With THAT money, I was able to puy some hard-to-make pieces for a second (keeper) M2. That one is the one in the pics. I'm still working on the loading pawl, but you've got to know the weapon or get within a foot to see that it is not a real M2HB.

While I was at a MVPA show, some guy had laser-cut Right side plates for the M1919A4. Since that is the "correct" MG for the Willys (as the M2hb just shook the crap out of the Jeep when fired), I thought I'd build the M1919. I found some hard-to-make pieces are available - like the air-cooled barrel shroud with about a zillion big holes in it. It made more sense to buy that part for $30 rather than layout all those holes in straight lines, center punch them & sit in front of a drill press for a few hours drilling and chamfering them. The M1919 is only lacking the rear-sight mount to be complete. I've got a sight, but I cannot replicate the mount. It's $80 and 3 rivits to be done. Both guns have operating charging handles, opening top covers; triggers, etc. The pic comparing the .50 cal with the 30.06 is pretty neat. I need to pit a /22 cal next to them for perspective.

These dummy guns were fun to build and I'd recommend them to anyone. My welding is OK, but I've got MAD grinding skills.

    Hey Glen,
I'll be there - look for a big red Ford F-150. Do you need an M23 machine gun mount, I've got an extra or a Ball & Stroud range finder? How about a 60 yr old prophylactic kit - new in pkg? (no guarantee for that one). Maybe a NIB Grimes light - never issued, or a couple hundred yds of 4" burlap scrim for camoflage netting. I'll have some interesting stuff. I may even bring my smoker and do up some ABTs. Please stop by.

What are you going to be in?

AHA...this was the post that inspired me to try the stuff. THANK YOU 49 T and C...I wanted to credit you over there on the 2A page but try as I would I couldn't find the post anymore!

I now have 8 adjustable wrenches and several pliers that are functional now thanks to THE WORKS....It is slowing down in effectiveness but still is doing the job, just slower.

WHen it no longe works I think I will just kill some weeds in the driveway with it or toss it down a toilet....any reason not to?

This stuff is amazing. Pics don't do this justice. These yokes were solid rust. The slip yoke splines were so rusted that I could get the tube inserted no more than about a half inch. When they came out of the TBC fifteen minutes later, the slip joint slid back and forth like it had been machined new.

There are just a couple drawbacks to using this method. First, the fumes are powerful. I got a strong whiff as I was standing over the vat fishing parts out and it about knocked me on my ***. Do this outdoors only.

The other is that it is not a degreaser, and I noticed parts if the tube that were oily going into the vat were protected from the agent and prevented rust removal.

Overall, though, this stuff is powerful, cheap, and works FAST. Especially on the inside of parts, where other methods are ineffective, the toilet bowl cleaner can save stuff from the scrap bin that you might otherwise given up. Thanks so much 49T&C for posting this!

Neat thing about "The Works" is that you mix a little of that with a bunch of little pieces of aluminum foil inside a 2 liter bottle and it explodes. With this said do not use it on aluminum parts as it creates a highly combustible gas.
