What is worn for Powr-lok clutches?

    I pulled apart a D44 Powr-lok, whose history I dont know to check the clutches. I did not know enough to check for slippage before taking the axle apart. I would not call the clutches worn but am not really sure. I have never seen any other friction clutches to compare them to. The surfaces are smooth, I dont see a lot of circular wear marks. You would think there would be a thickness spec but I cant find one. Any advice?

    Only way to test the limited slip that I know of is to put the transmission in neutral, jack up one side of your Jeep until the tire is off the ground then put a torque wrench on the axle nut and measure how much torque it takes to turn the tire.
    But since you’ve already got this apart there is absolutely no sense in putting questionable clutch disks back in. Go ahead and replace them with new.

    If you can post pics of the clutches I can probably tell you if they are good or not. Very rarely are old used clutches still good though.

    Third pic, top two on the right need replacing. They are grooved bad enough. First pic, second from left on bottom looks like it could need replacing also. Hard to tell from the pic. If it were me I'd put new clutches in unless you can find some good used ones locally. Also depends on what you're going to use it for. As the clutches wear, the preload is less so less lock up/friction so the more it acts like an open diff.
