It seems that the Whitco tops are the best quality of the three brands I have here.....

Here are the date stamps on them:

The sides seems to have more of an angle at the rear edge than the other tops have....different model Jeep? Also, notice that the strikers for the doors are METAL on the Whitco tops....they're plastic on the others....
It is about 39" from edge to edge.

I think this is the set of doors that goes with one of the tops. It seems to be made of the same material and has the metal striker, but I could be wrong. Thoughts?

You saw pics of one of the Kayline Luxair tops in the first post of my thread on www.jeep-cj.com. Here's the other one...it is in even better condition than the first one:

And here are the other two Kayline tops. These have different side window configurations. They also have grommets for turn-buttons where they attach to the windshield frame (instead of a channel-type system):

And here are some Kayline doors:

I have two identical sets of these (angled at the bottom, not rounded):

Also, the bottom part is curved a bit. At first I thought they might be damaged, but all 4 are the same:

There are 2 sets of these doors which, I think, go with the Luxair tops. They seem identical, except one set has 4 buttons on the leading edge of the doors and the other set has 5 buttons:

And then theres' the Bestops. A few are the same and one is quite a bit wider, but about the same length. What models do you think? They have one solid window on each side and one large window in the back:

Okay, one more for the night (but much more tomorrow). Here's the 1/2 top, still covered in dust and grime:

I don't remember if I mentioned this, but my business partner also owns an awning business. His seamstress said she'd be willing to produce copies of any of these tops (or others) if there was enough interest. So, is there a market for new tops, but with the vintage style?

I'd be interested in a half-top. There seems to be a lot of demand for CJ-5 half-tops (and Jeepster half-tops - see the thread in the Jeepster forum) on the board, even though it may not be enough demand to support full retail production.

    Will send you a PM.

Post #22, doors w/angled and bowed out bottoms look like flat fender doors. Leading edge flap should be vertical from the bottom edge to where it meets the w/s for them to fit a '5.

I just started another thread here with all the literature and instructions that I uncovered while going through everything. There's info for Whitco, Bestop and Kayline tops and doors. Here's the link to thread: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76962

Going through the soft top boxes, I discovered this:

That should help narrow things down a bit. There were a couple other boxes, but I could not read (or find) anything descriptive on them....

From the lit I have, model C-2A-L fits only the CJ-2A....

    The C-5-L fits CJ-5, CJ-5A, DJ-5 1975 and earlier....

and I haven't found any lit that describes what the F-3-B Luxair fits.....but I assume it is for a CJ-3B.

Looks like you got the help you needed. I figured youd get some good info here. I really thought that first one was for a Cj-6 with that small side window. The dimensions wouldve revealed the truth. Glad you figured it out. You got my email if you find the right one for me.

    I'm baaaaaack.......

After a hectic (but good) year (including the birth of a son in June and a full remodel on a 1500 square foot house), I finally have a couple seconds to finally get this project going again.

Believe it or not, I haven't sold any of the soft tops, bows, doors or hardware yet.....it's all right where I left it about 6 or 7 months ago when I started this thread.

This time, I'm gonna sell all this stuff and get it out of our shop (and, hopefully, put some $$ in the bank).

So stay tuned.....you guys will have the inside track on this stuff when it is all identified and ready to sell. Thanks again for all the help I've received so far and in advance for whatever light you can shed on this intriguing puzzle in the future.

    Onward!

Okay, so I've been doing tons of research online trying to identify which goes with what (so to speak). I found this page on the STC/Kayline website which has the installation instructions for many of their tops: http://www.thejeep.com/stc/install.html. I figured that, perhaps, their design hadn't changed TOO much over the years and I may be able to narrow the field a bit. The instructions also contain a parts list for each top that shows a drawn picture of each part which helped ALOT.

Question: In some lit I found regarding Bestop soft tops, they indicate that windshields for CJ2A, 3A and 3B are all interchangeable and, that, regardless of the vehicle's model, the style of the windshield will determine what soft top will fit properly. So, if I'm understanding correctly, this means that the body/tub is the same for the 3 models....the differences in the soft tops is only due to the type of windshield on the rig. Is that right?

How are you able to narrow it to the CJ3A or CJ5? What differentiates it from the CJ2A, CJ3B or CJ6? Thanks!

Warloch Did you say Flattie??? Staff Member

2A and 3A tubs are the same - Windshield is the only difference.

3B - not sure as it has a higher firewall than the 2A/3A. Someone can clarify, but I believe the tub is closer to the 5s

5s - the tub is very different from the flatties (2,3s - flat fenders). Everything on the tub is different from the earlier models - sides at doors, rear corners, windshield and how it hooks to the tub - height, the whole thing.

  20. jpflat2a

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

not long enough in overall length for for CJ6
CJ2A attaches differently if I recall across the top of the windshield frame.
    could be a 3B I suppose
measurements would tell the tale too.
