I have been sucked into all the build threads I can find and I have a feeling that I'm going to go out in the garage and take my body off and start to fix the rust! Also I have been thinking very hard about stretching the frame and body to make my 5 into a 6. It needs a new top anyway:). Is it just me or do all of you just jump right in? Also the wife wants the jeep to be red. I don't mind red except everyone has a red jeep. I painted mine green because it was the only color that came out of the can well

Thats a picture of your jeep? You would really have to twist my arm to get me to paint/build/strech/or even touch that jeep unless theres something drastic going on underneath. I think your jeep looks great green and the top looks to be in excellent shape. Much better then any of my 3 tops. I would drive that jeep for at least another few years IMO

Your not really going to touch that thing are you? Unless you plan to take it to car shows(puke) I wouldn't change a thing. I'd be proud to drive that Jeep any day.

Thanks. The tub is not as good as it looks. I was able to hide most of the cancer but it does need a new floor. Maybe I have been looking at all the new steel on the build threads and wish mine had that. I should just drive the damn thing.

I would never have torn into mine if it hadn't been taking on copious amounts of water and sand every time it rained... unless you are dealing with some large holes or structural damge... or just enjoy investing long hours into another project, I would enjoy as is

Here's how these deals go... You get an idea in your head about starting some major project. You kick it around and can't seem to talk yourself out of it. You budget a certain amount of money you think it will cost. You start the project right before little league baseball season. Jeep sets torn apart until end of season. Kid has a great year and makes All Stars. Jeep set another 2 months. Finally get back on it. It is much worse than you thought. Have to stop for the holidays. Christmas and New Years is finally over so you wait on your tax check. Work a little more on it waiting to buy all the new parts. Finding even more stuff that needs fixed. Your buddy comes over and says "if that was mine I would(fill in the blank) while you have it apart". Buddy goes wheeling the next weekend while you take his advice. Lay awake on Saturday night wondering "what was I thinking!" Finally getting close as little league sign up sheet comes home from school. Rush to finish it before baseball starts. Cut some corners. Finally take it for a spin before it is really done. Hope All Stars is cancelled this year. Kid wins state championship! Get back on Jeep. Finish it up just in time to go wheeling before the wheather gets crappy. Spend all winter wishing you had not cut those corners. Lay awake at night trying to remember what was wrong with your Jeep before you started but happy about project because you justified buying a new drill press. Realize you spent three times your original budget. Smile and take your All Star for a drive.

I would let the tub get real rusty for a long time before I remove it, provided the frame dosn't rust out.

gotta agree... Don't touch it. Just enjoy. This string is not exactly what happens to me but....

I bought a 55 CJ-5 "just to use while hunting". So far I have resisted the urge to strip it down and do a frame up restore. However the boy is now 13 and I think he needs to understand how much work goes into a rebuild that way he will appreciate a car more. Or at least I hope so...

I plan on getting a donor tub to steal any parts that I might need. Also I might plan on stretching this thing into a cj6 if my skills are up to it. I found this on Pirate..

What do you guys think? Is that a good way to stretch the frame?

If you trash that body, give it to me. I would just clean up the rust and paint the inside.

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

x3 on just clean it up and paint it. I'd do a little welding and tacking, removing the rust as needed. Then use a bedliner type of coating. Be ready to play in the MN snow in a few weeks.........

    X4..

Clean it up and paint it. You've got a good lookin' jeep now.
...and you're going to need it for the winter snow.

    x eleventybillion.

Wire wheel that sucker and line it. Maybe add some structural beef around your cage mount, put it back together and enjoy.

Knowbody likes the idea of stretching this 5 into a 6? I found a new inner fender today and now I just need sometime to put it in. Can you paint over the bedliner stuff because I like the interior to match the outside. Also, I have read that the bedliner sucks to take out later on, when I need to do more bodywork.

I say go for the stretch. thought briefly about doing it to mine when I first tore it down. the amount of work I had to put into it to get it back together I should have just gone ahead and stretched it. if you have to redo the floors anyway...
