I started this project about a month ago and am still working on it. Have the bumper itself finished and mounted to my jeep. currently working on the tire carrier and hub assembly. I found a fellow ecj5'er who used his torch and expertise to cut the bumper blank. He also sent me the hub assembly and clevis mounts....made my project much more manageable...thanks. Enjoy the pics.

    Nice!

what are the recovery points tied into? Looks kinda close to tie directly into the frame.

The bumper will be tied into the frame rails via two L brackets. The shackle mounts are welded through front and rear on the 3/16 2x4 bumper as is the reciever hitch.

Made a little progress. Made out of 1.75" square. Since a 31" tire is going to hang on it I thought 2" was a little overkill and heavier too.

Got the welder out today since I had a couple of free hours. It's starting to look like something now....only if I knew what:)

I wanted the the pivot to be on the drivers side because the gas tank filler is on the passenger side. It would have been in the way on the other side.

I made some more progress the last few days. Last night I was 3/4 the way through my welding and ran out of solid core wire. I hate when it's 10:30 at night and you run out of the stuff you need to finish the project. I had some flux core wire and debated on waiting versus using that....my need to keep going had me use the flux core....boy is it alot more messy.

I got up early this AM and got busy with the rattle can. I'm getting close to winding up this project. On my list of things to do....work on mounting the high lift jack and make tie in's to the frame. I think I will mount the high lift on top horizontally with some angle iron.

Nice job. One thing comes to mind: Where do you plan to hook the trailer safety chains?

I figured I would attach it to one or both of the bumper shackles.

I guess that would work, assuming you're talking about the clevis mounts. :)

When I do mine I'm going to put a couple of holes in some flat plate and weld it on the bottom of the bumper under the receiver. I've actually had a hitch fail (operator error  ) and the safety chains kept us together.

Thats a scary thought on a short wheel based vehicle! I had a tilting snowmobile trailer pop up on me behind the jeep a long time ago. Man that was scary.....the trailer pushed the whole jeep around and almost landed in my lap(the trailer).

 Luckily, mine was from a longer wheel base pickup but still made things very exciting. Good luck with your fabs. I'd be working on my rear bumper by now but all these other issues keep popping up, like the new points installed yesterday that won't fire now. It's always something. :)
