Hi all need a little advice.

I am rebuilding axles for the first time.
Have my 44 rear apart now.
And have some options too consider not sure which way to go.
As a preface I should say the jeep is for wheeling not jumping or abuse.

I have the normal 1953 10 spline open diff right now.
    Switching gears forsure.
But want to add a locker.

Soo.. I could just get a 10 spline locker and call it good. locksrite 280.00

Or.. switch to 19 spline tapered axles and a rebuilt auburn locker for an additional 450.00

Or.. buy 1 piece 19 spline axles and a auburn for 650.00 Dutchman new.

The 1 piece axles are tempting. The source for these says they are easier to setup, no end play adjustment.

Staying with the plan of sm 420 and buick v6 and 32.5 tires at what point is this overkill???

Only you can answer that one about overkill.

19-spline D44 axles can be had for cheap, and they swap right in. If you're going to buy a lock-rite, that may be the route to go. (If I had known that going in, I wouldn't be swapping over to 19-spline axles right now...)

With a stock or relatively stock driveline and your anticipated useage, I'm not sure I'd spring for either 1-piece axles OR an Auburn locker. This has been discusse d many time in the forums, and the consensus seemed to be that tapered axles will hold up pretty well if you have the key inserted correctly and the nut torqued/pinned correctly. YMMV. ;)

Running the 225 and a SM465 - went with the 30 spline FF so I could put OX Lockers in. I wanted selectability. It really depends on what you want.

ive been running 10 spline axles with a lockright and a 350 sbc power plant for more than 6 years without any problems. i do a lot of rock crawling, and a little highway driving. remember, you can break anything, so id stay with the 10 spline.

I found a good deal on the axles for the 30 spline FF swap, but now it looks like the rest of the parts are going to cost me an arm and a leg. I'm rethinking it now, so I may put those axles in the classifieds. Warloch, did you use the Warn kit or custom?

    nickmil In mothballs.

Noflyzone, if you decide to sell the FF shafts let me know. I may be interested if they are for an offset CJ housing.

I'd switch to 19 spline axles myself or 30 spline if you're going to spend the money on a locker or limited slip. Perfect time to upgrade and I've seen far more 10 spline axles twisted and broken than 19 or 30 spline. Not saying it can't or won't happen but 10 spline are definitely the weakest of the bunch. :iagree: For me this whole process started when I pulled my bone-stock D41 (10-spline) apart to put the lock-rite in and I discovered the splines were slightly tweaked on the passenger side (short) axle shaft. I found a set of 19-spline shafts here in the classifieds and I just lucked into the side "gears" for a 19-spline lock-rite when Posimoto grenaded his innards.

Also, during this whole ordeal a bunch of folks cautioned me to NOT use the Omix-Ada replacement axle shafts due to questionable tempering. Look for a good used set if you're going to swap shafts.

I am going with ten splines and a locksrite.
Just to many things to buy to get this baby on the road.

I used the Warn Kit. It was about $750 with the kit and other Misc parts.

Did I hear that Warn discontinued the kit some time ago???

Yes - Warn is discontinued, I got one from a buddy who had it sitting on a shelf and sold it to me for his cost. :0 He wants it back now - TOO LATE I installed it and he had it sitting for almost 5 years :)

A lot of work and money would go into the conversion. I found that WFO in California is doing it pretty regular now. They sell or can get all the parts to 30 spline FF.
