Axle suprises

    If you put the lockright in the front you'll want to remove the interloc pill from the D18 TC, that way you can have 2lo to help steer that muther on a tight trail. AMHIK

    That cam out pretty nice. I would be very comfortable on that. Its not like you are doing 70 miles per hour. Compare that to a 50 year old worn out piece.

    Just to stir the pot a little more, In my group, we have three CJ-7's (front and rear welded), two CJ-2A's (front welded), one CJ-5 (front welded), and a CJ-6 (front welded).

    After about 3 year running (very hard running), I can say that the only thing that broke was the front drive shafts on one of the CJ-7's (he has a 304 and a very heavy foot!!)

    The trick is to have the spiders completely clean and dry before welding. And only weld / fill the spiders in 2 spots on each gear. That way there is a little "give" to it.

    We are also starting to weld in a magnet on the bottom of the differential case just in case something did let loose.

    My $.02

    P.S. I do not have anything locked yet. With 33x13.50 and no power steering yet, I would need to weightlift for about 3 years in order to turn the wheel if locked.

    P.S.X2 The turning radius is reduced to about half when locked. Most of my guy's run in 2wd on easy going trails. When the times get rough, they lock in and is very impressive!!!!

    Weld it!!!!

    And run the locking hubs up front. It's about an hour's drive from Crawfords to the trailhead (only about 20 miles, but it's slow-going). You'll appreciate the ability to "unlock" the front while making that trip.

    Definately get locking hubs!!! Quality ones are worth every penny!!

    Nice repair ! What did you use for a welder, stick or Mig ? If stick, what rod did you choose ?

    Thanks for rhe responses, just the feedback I needed.
    We used a Tig welder to fix the ball joint and then a small die grinder.
    I have bought some warn premium's from Crage but plan on keeping the flanges as spares.
    The locker went in the front very easily, would recomend it to anyone. Remember though the cost of the locker isn't where it stops,I went with all new bearings and races, Studded the knuckles,Had to buy a new axleshaft and upgraded to better locking hubs.
    My rear is being welded by some local rockcrawler's who know much more about that than I do. I am going to trust their judgement While dismissing their advice to buy Rockwells.

    Good deal on getting it all back together. What size tires are you going to be running at Tellico?

    If you need some rocks or know someone who does let me know, I stumbled across a heap of steering axles.

    Any more pics of the axle work? Did you have a machine shop do the knuckle work?

    I will take some more pics as I put everything back together,still not there yet.
    Simmons machine shop on Hwy 61 spotfaced my knuckles for me.

    I'll look them up when it comes time. I'm still trying to decide if I want to refurb this D27 or go with a later D30.

    I could be wrong, but....
    are the backing plates reversed ?
    seems the adjuster opening should be at the rear, not at the front
    but then, it's been a loooonggg time since I have inspected 10" brakes
