Today I picked up 71 CJ5 from local a guy I have known for a while for $400. Over the last three years or so it has been in his barn. In the last few months I convinced him to sell it to me. He is a great guy and I think he dident want to sell it because it does need quite a bit of work. Anyways, we think it is an old military Jeep. It came stock with the 4 speed manual trans, which I hear is pretty rare and from what I am told the trans and transfercase is worth the selling price alone. I got it up to 30 mph on the way home and was quite a scary ride, I am hopeing some shocks and springs will steady up the ride. I am going to put this Jeep at our cabin here in northern MI for basicly trail riding. I am posting up some pictures, if you have any info on the history of this Jeep or what the plaque means please post up. Thanks..

It was built 174 Jeeps before mine, does that help? R)

    Sounds like a good score!

Yeah, doesn't appear military. Can't read the tag very well but it appears to have been owned by a government agency. Still cool factor having the tag there. Good looking JEEP anyway. Looks like the dog approves. :)

Here is a better view of the plaque.. Is there any way to track anything on it or find out what organization owned it?

dohc281 It is what it is.

You got a steal. Nice starting point. Have fun with it.

  11. Great looking CJ5, even better price! Definitely not a military, but the military & other government agencies have purchased civilian jeeps before . . . it could have been used by Civil Defense, a state forestry service, even the Coast Guard or Navy for shore patrol or base transportation. At $400 & a drive home, it can't be beat!

Yeah, I've seen a plaque similar to that on a USFS Cherokee...

The 4-speed V6 Jeeps, if factory, are very, very scarce. So scarce that it's difficult to show that they actually existed. The legend says that there were a few of them made in 1971, and they should be the close ratio (4.02:1 first gear) T-18. If it's a factory 4-speed, it's quite a find.

I am pretty sure it is an original 4 speed and if the 4.02:1 first gear is a creeper gear, then that is right too.. If there is any way to verify it with the vin I have it listed in a pic above..

Sorry to say but no. The VIN doesn't go into that much detail.

The 4.02:1 1st gear is not generally considered a creeper aka granny gear. The granny truck transmission is 6.32:1. 4.02:1 is lower than the 3.1:1 that comes with the usual T-14 however.

Look under your carpets to see if the floorboards are factory. The T-18 is much bigger than the usual 3-speeds, and homebrew floor pans should be obvious. The factory pans are distinctive - post pics.

Otherwise, pull the floor panel and look at the top of the transmission for an ID tag. Someone here with a parts manual could ID the transmission from the tag.

Since the glove box door seems to be missing, that pretty much makes the Jeep worthless. Bring it to me and I will dispose of it for ya.

    Just kidding, great score!!!

Markings on the tranny, cast into the tranny body on the side, may show "T18" or
    "13 01 xxxx"
Either of these identify the T18 transmission.

Rare indeed, to find a factory V6/T18 combo. Congratulations!

With a bit of work and some replacement items, your Jeep can easily be stable and steady at 65-70 mph. Mine is (well, not now  but it will be again in September ;) )

Picture #2 shows most of what's of interest in regards to the trans.
