225 exhaust headers/manifold question

Hi all, I am swapping in a 225 v6 into a 50 cj3a. It came from a 69 cj. I have saginaw steering and it looks like I will have to notch a motor mount to mave it clear. My next problem is the headers that came off the 69 are outside the frame type and are hitting the firewall fender seam. What will work better than this? If need be I will cut and reweld these to fit. Will stock manifolds work with both faceing the rear. Any advice or part supplier names would really be appreciated. Thanks

There will be plenty of people who will contradict me here, but I'd say ditch the headers. They really won't offer you anything in the way of real power increase (without doing a cam, intake manifold.......)but they will help you heat up the floorpan and position your mufflers so you can beat the dog snot out of them on the rocks. That is of you have rocks where you are. My advice is, use the manifolds off of a Buick passenger car with a 231. Mid to late 80's work well. The drivers side manifold is fairly flat and you can just squeek your steering shaft by it. And yes, you may have to notch the left motor mount. Good to see another NRA Life Member on board.

I happen to agree. Ditch the headers. I guess it comes down to what you do with your jeep. If you want low end torque and an engine that will lug way down (I do) then I think you will be happy with the manifolds. If you think you need a bunch of horsepower when you step on the gas, you will need more than a set of headers to make much of a difference. A big block chevy on alcohol would be great.

When I swap mine into my cj2 i might cust do some block hugger "headers" so that i can route the exhaust exactly how i want.

I have always said that headers add nothing except a little jingle in the pocket of the vendor, and more noise to scare the animals and neighbors.

Yeah, they use 'em on race engines, but they don't have starters on race engines either, and no one would suggest eliminating the starter on a Jeep.

I don't believe that any increase in power as a result of a header on an old jeep engine would be measurable. Theoretically, there could be something there, but it would fall off in the rounding error.

I know. But with access to a laser cutter and tig/mig welders I can order mandrel bent U pipe from jegs or summit and make my own. I was thinking 1inch main tubes to a 2inch collecter which would go into the ypipe which would have 2inch collecter and run it with a 2inch pipe all the way to the rear and mount a muffler all stock like. Won't gain anything over the manifolds, but I can have the exhaust dump right where I want it and have it clear everything.

I think you would have a slight increase in hp (say 5-10, 15 at most) with headers.

If the headers are built right, Mine will be built more for routing than power gain. I just want to try my hand at it and get the exhaust out of the way and looking different.

  10. IIRC, there are different headers for CJ5s and flatfenders. Sounds like you've got a pair of CJ5 headers ('69). I'd check the AA catalog and or maybe hedman as well.

    Another chorus from the choir...
Headers - hot, noisy, fragile, leaky, bulky, expensive. Strictly race car tech. For a driver or trail rig, you'd be much better off with cast iron manifolds.

    X5 or X6 or whatever.

I want to ditch mine for manifolds but for now they're fine. :)

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    sorry
    I like mine
    they fit like a glove
from AA for the V6 conversion in a flatty
I would never run stcok manifolds

Ok, not for against, but all of you guys getting ready to yank your headers in favor of manifolds, if your headers are beyond saving, consider offering up your head flanges for someone interested in fabing a set.:)

It's in the future. I'll probably look into routing my exhaust like Boyink did on Dutch first. I just don't like the side dump.

I don't mind the side dump, but then there isn't a rock within 50 miles of my house:rofl: I am thinking of fabbing a set of shorties that lead to single pipes going out under the side. that way all of the tire slung goo is landing on a single (easily replaceable)pipe instead of packing into the back of my collectors

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

my engine/carb are stock, just has headers
and there is a big difference in performance with the mufflers on or off
the engine breathes and responds better, fact not fiction
    I don't boulder bash

For the 225 there is only one set of headers and they are the same all the way around. I just modified the body but the only other option that is worth a sh!t is moding the headers to your specs. Don't use the stock one goes forward and the other goes back real pain in the @ss. Good luck

?? I have two sets of headers for my V6. The old set dumps out pretty far from the frame rail, closer to the edge of the body. The ones I'm repacing those with hug the frame rail much better (so the exhaust system will be less likely to get rock damage).

I also have some 231 manifolds I could use, but I think the exhaust work from a shop would end up costing me more if I went that way.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    the V6 CJ5 headers really won't fit a flatty
not without a lot of work to the body or cutting of the fenders
    or severly modifying the headers
that's why the AA headers are a good choice
I had to cut 1" out of the rear tube and reweld on the drivers side
and that's only because I didn't want to cut the fenders
