Okay, another question for y'all. The fellow that has the Dana 25 for $100 says it is from a 1950, he hasn't inspected it, and it needs lug studs. He also says he has a Dana27 out of a 1963 for $150, "the gears are in good shape."
What is the difference between the 25 and the 27? I asked him and he said "Axle shaft U joints and ring gear diameter. Same width, same hubs. Same spring width as the 25, same diff location as the 25 also."
Will the 27 work in my jeep? What would I need to change to make it fit?

I don't remember ever seeing the nut coming off the pinion shaft before.

If the D27 is from a 63 and original, it's going to have 4.27 gears. You need to verify what your present gearing is. The tooth count is likely stamped on the edge of your destroyed ring gear. The 50 D25 will likely have 5.38's and will bolt in. That said, I'd be very surprised if it didn't need a bunch of work, is going to have Bendix or Rezzapa axle shafts and different bushings in the spindles to go with those shafts. You present axle no doubt has Spicer shafts which I consider a bit stronger. You will have to come up with a different yoke for the D27 also.

If it wasn't for the gearing, the D27 would be the better axle. Tough call on that selection. I think I would maintain the search a bit longer.

They guy says the 27 is 5:38. Is that even possible?
I will try to look into whether or not the tooth count is on the ring gear when I get home from work.

I'd snag it as long as you are able to confirm that the gearing is correct. It won't be the first or the last time someone thinks they have one thing and turns out it's something else

If I buy both, is there a chance of me making my money back on the one that doesnt work?

Mayyyyyybe. But don't count on it.
Better to find out what you have, and buy only what you need.

3.73 ratio from what I see.

If I interpret that correctly, those are 3.73:1 gears, made June 24, 1965. Those would be typical gears for a 65 V6 CJ and, more importantly, D27 gears. Does the front cover have a vent in it or is the vent from the top of the housing? You should also check the webs on the cast portion of the axle housing. The "25" or "27" will be cast on there.

Vent is on the front cover, and the housing is stamped 25.

So now you know what happened to your front differential. Next thing you should do is check the rear differential to see if it's any good.

I'm just raising more questions than answers. How did my 25 wind up with 3:73 gears? What do I need to fix it? Do I need an axle with 3:73 gears, or 5:38? Do I need to change my whole drive train? Rear axle too?

Your guess is as good as mine about your 25 and the gear ratio. That's why finding out the condition of your rear axle should be your next step...and of course see what the gear ratio is.

Yup, you seem to have a classic case of mix and match Jeep. The next step is definitely to verify what you have in back. On the bright side, this is going to be an excellent learning experience.

A Dana 25 front cover will fit on a 27. You really need to look at the cast number on the housing, not stamped number on the cover.

Here's an example of the cast number to the lower right of the cover from ebay:
