Check the bolt lengths holding the TCase to the adaptor. Somewhere back in the cobwebby part of my noggin I recall an experience where I tried sealing the Tcase 3 times before figuring out 1 bolt was tightening to the bottom of the hole before tightening to the Tcase. Can't remember which hole it was but it might be worth checking.

    FWIW,

I used a thin coat of Permatex Aviation Form-a-gasket on all the gaskets when I did mine. I also used Ultra Black silicon on the ends of all the shafts and ARP thread sealer on all the bolts that penitrate oil areas. I won't say it has no leaks, but it doesn't leave spots on the floor (so far). That's about the best you can hope for with a Dana 18.

Mine did the same thing when I first put it all together. I had missed a spot around a bearing retainer.

After I added power steering I noticed I put the steering box too far forward. Too late now.

Well, I found the source of the leak on the back of the T18, and it was my own stupid fault. I've always used studs in the 2 lower positions to mount the trans to the transfer case, it makes it easier to install the tcase. Well, the studs worked perfectly on the T90 but on the T18 they were just long enough to prevent the adapter from bolting solidly to the trans. :banghead:

That thing can be a beatch. I can't tell you how much I looked at that thing, took pictures, ruminated, obsessed over whether it was in all the way.

The snap ring will actually turn if it's in the groove properly. If you put it in and you cant turn it without compressing it, it's not installed right.

Even though I'm currently using a cane to walk-around I have managed to get a little bit done on the CJ.
Trans tunnel and linkages are coming together.

The goddam drain plug on the T18 is giving me fits! I've had it out and resealed it 3 times and it still drips...I'm at a loss.
Do you think a brass plug might seal up better than this steel one?

I've been using Permatex torque seal rather than teflon tape. Much better results.

    Weld er shut :twist:

Or use a brass reducer and use a smaller steel plug with magnet.

    I wouldn't even notice that after running a t-90a

I use a couple wraps of Teflon tape and the good sticky baby crap yellow pipe dope. I have threaded and run bunch of large gas line and this worked the best to pass the
pressure test for the inspector. Used Permatex Ultra Black on the one hole that passes through the transfer case when doing the pan...it leaks. It was very clean. Next
time I'll do the above method. When i fill the transfer case I give it a couple extra pump through the bolt hole where the clutch arm used to attach. Figure a little more gear
oil can't hurt with an overdrive and makes up for the leakage long term.

I saw that too. I used leak trace powder in an spray can. I've been told spray foot powder works just as good and is cheaper. Clean it all down with brake cleaner and then dry with air gun. Spray powder on and see where it's coming from.

Maybe run a pipe tap in to clean up the thread a little?

    GOD DAMN IT
The clutch will not adjust out...I have it so tight that there's no free play, the TO bearing is pushing on the pressure plate with no pressure on the pedal. The clutch won't release, it grinds hard going into 1st or reverse. I'm really at a loss, I don't know what to do. I checked for clutch disengagement before I installed the trans, I put a dummy shaft in it and used a ratchet strap to pull back the throwout fork & it worked as it should. I have about an inch of travel at the fork, I think that should be enough.
I have a stock cable, stock bellhousing, stock throwout fork and a stock pressure plate. I don't know what I did wrong.
This damn projest has just kicked my *** from the start, it literally put me in the hospital with a torn up knee and has been nothing but 1 problem after another.
