    Have you guys seen the new electric axle assemblies that are coming out? Solid axles, and the motor mounts where the pinion comes out on the axle. Would totally do away with the transmission/transfer case? And you could pack that area with batteries and controllers. I think in 5 years we'll be seeing some major changes and upgrades to the ev platform

    I was recently in south Florida and seen roadside signs for hurricane evacuating routes.
    what happens when every electric car needs to leave? what about the cars not fully charged? what if they all run out of juice in the same area and need to charge along the way?

    makes me wonder about ev's.

    They're getting smaller and more powerful. If you think about it, the internal combustion engine has almost 100 years of innovation compared to the electric motor. I think the biggest innovation in motors has been brushless, right?

    Just think of the difference between the f-head and say a 2.7L ecoboost.....

    Well actually, I think the first electric motor predates the first internal combustion engine and the first electric car came out in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. Materials technology has just favored the internal combustion engine. Time moves on and I expect my next daily driver is an ev. (In 8 or 10 years, I keep vehicles a long time) I will still have something with an internal combustion engine for traveling any serious distance for quite some time to come. I think Ford is going to be selling “crate motors” based on their e-mustang platform. Hot Rodding of the future.

    Might be OK for a local delivery truck but un-sprung weight is a bad thing on bumpy roads at speed. :(

    Personally, I wouldn't swap one into a classic vehicle. I like old engines, the simplicity and familiarity are important to me. I barely keep my phone operational. If others like them, I hope you enjoy them. I guess just not everyone's cup of tea.

    I'd go EV for my daily driver but I definitely agree with fhoehole. The mechanical nature of the old ones is part of the character, simplicity, and longevity. And while EVs are currently a unique experience, one day an all mechanical powertrain will be a unique experience again. I'm not worried about the numbers as long as I'm smiling and getting where I'm going.

    I remember hearing about electric cars during the Katrina debacle... Gas engine cars were running out of gas in the endless traffic jam but the electric ones were not. They get the same mileage at 2 mph as they do at 40 (false, but you know). In a traffic jam I think electrics are better than gas.

    That particular power unit is rated at an equivalent of 500 hp or so, way too radical for a little CJ. Tesla uses two of them in the S model. EVWest already offers units that rival the F head. I think I can get it done for less than 10K, maybe less if pricing continues to drop. One of the challenges is deciding when to jump in, since the technology is moving at an incredible pace,

    Way more sense to go full flintstones and use rock rollers and human horse power to push the thing. What ya gonna do with a big arse battery when it craps out. how much is a Prius battery disposal fee and what's that do to the enviroment in the future?

    The flip side is a can of gas is portable and can be added to a gas tank but if a electric vehicle doesn't have enough charge......?

    Something I don't recall being mentioned is air conditioning or heating? How does that work with an electric vehicle?

    By consuming the battery power....


    With respect, IMHO the world could benefit most from us all doing fewer needless trips with motor vehicles. The time has come to re-think these Rituals of Affluence, and the wasteful ways we consume energy.

    Most full electric (that I've given magazine article attention to) have a dedicated electric motor for ac and they either used a heat pump or element for cabin heat.

    I've also seen hybrids (I think jeep 4xe is this way) with a motor generator instead of alternator to drive accessories.

    In my youth a once or if we were lucky twice a month “wasteful display of a Ritual of Affluence” was a welcome family activity that was barely affordable for us but invaluable in the memories our family have together. Sometimes these memories growing up or after we are grown have much more value than a few gallons of gasoline used minimally.

    Agreed. Me too.

    On the other hand, I see people driving several miles to town multiple times every day, sometimes just picking up a cup of coffee.

    A sixty-seat schoolbus goes down my road every day with two kids in it, while SUV's queue up in line at the school with just one kid in each one.

    On a larger scale, how many millions of gallons are burned every year commuting to work or traveling to buy groceries, because these things are no longer available locally? We have built a pattern of society based on our value system when gas was .30 cents a gallon. That needs reconsideration.
