This. Back in the day the diesel guys used WD-40 to test start the old 6.9 and real early 7.3 Furd diesels so they didn’t have issues. Starting fluid (ether) is too dry and can cause detonation and dry start issues.

Sorry, I didn't understand that it was a diesel so no carburetor.
I used Wynn's for valves in the oil, Bardhal in the fuel and a Belgium product directly sprayed on the valves from the holes for spark plugs, in a diesel you have also holes so you can do it.
The idea is to clean all dry dusts inside the engine to have all move free and well.
For diesel engines you have many products like this in USA, maybe wd40 can help.
Also all must be cleaned from varmints coming inside all holes, they are very clever.

Alan, it's usually the exhaust valves that get fouled, the Cerlist is a 2 cycle engine- they do not have exhaust valves. The exhaust exits through open ports in the cylinder walls that are exposed when the piston is near the bottom of the cylinder.

This may seem very strange and odd at first but when you consider this engine was designed & built in France it all makes (sort of) sense. :D

This is a really cool project. I saw a one at a Jeep show in Fletcher NC.
Seems there were only between 400 to 600 of these made.

Very cool project. I will be watching this.

Make sure you have a block of wood to block the intake in case it runs away! That's a gem of an old turd right there! Good luck!

That was a very interesting read. And shines some light on what I was doing wrong. The starter fluid was pre igniting because it was trying to fire probably long before the the injectors would have fired, as a few others have mentioned. Very helpful article, thank you:beer:

Isn't that like a model airplane engine? Two stroke diesel? I think my .049 cox operates that way lol

I wouldn't recommend running the Jeep on the Nitromethane blend though...

The Cox engine has a glow plug that ignites the fuel, as I recall. Not a diesel in the sense of being compression ignited. I understood that the heat of the previous cycle kept the glow plug hot and ignited the subsequent cycle.

That and nitromethane ignites a little different than diesel.

Here’s that switch I mentioned earlier. In my binder there’s a diagram for it. Called an Orpin switch. And I’m probably at least somewhat wrong about its function
