Guys my sump got a good smack the last trip out, I've tried to get the dent out with a slide hammer but I've noted the oil pressure is fluctuating and dropping at rpm but when left to idle it returns to normal. I think the pickup has been damaged or partially blocked from the dent?

How hard is it to remove the sump with the engine in place, any tricks of the trade etc

Pull one side motor mount and lift a little to clear the block sides of the mount.

I cut a corner off my passenger side motor mount to get mine off. Didn't take much.

Guys, I've still got problems, below is the full story. What do you think

Guys, I need some advice, a couple if weekends ago I was out wheeling and hit a tree stump which put a sizable dent in the oil pan. I drained the oil and using a slide hammer and a welded nut I tried to remove most of the dent. I then filled up with my normal 20w50 and some stop smoke additive (burns a little oil) and I noticed that the oil pressure would be normal at idle but when you accelerated the pressure would drop off and when the gas pedal was released the oil pressure returned to normal. My thought was the dent had damaged the intake or the dent maybe was still blocking the pickup. I thus removed the oil pan, and saw no damage to the intake pipe work and the strainer looked perfect. So I repaired the dent and reinstalled the oil pan. I've still got the same issue. Can anybody shed any light on a possible cause for this. Was thinking a oil filter issue or oil pressure release valve.

Note my oil pressure would normally be:

    60 PSI cold
40 PSI hot normal running rpm
    20 psi idle

When the pan was bent it also bent the pickup screen part up slightly. At idle the pump is not sucking as much oil so pressure is low. When revving the pump is pulling much more oil which is lowering the oil in the pan and causing a oil starvation. (that is my theory and explanation)

Possibly but I believe the gap between the strainer and pan is around 5/16 or so, that would mean less than a quart of oil in the pan which I struggle to comprehend. May latest thought is possibly a cracked intake pipe after the hit and maybe its allowing air to be drawn in? I'm really stumped on this

Ok so if the screen sump head is submerged completely under oil at idle due low oil usage then oil in pan is reduced at revs and lowered below the top of sump screen head, that could leave the pickup pipe to screen head connection exposed to air. Crack at pipe to head connection.

I don't recall the details of this engine... but damaged gasket at pickup tube to block sucking air at higher rpm?

I dont believe there is any gaskets on the intake, it's one piece and screws directly into the block

Possibly but the strainer is say 5/8 or so thick. That would say less than 2 quarts in the pan at throttle, I still cant believe that there would be so little in the pan. I do feel it's likely to be air but I don't want to pull the oil pan again if it was something totally non related (ie oil pressure relief or faulty oil filter) that has just happened at the same time as this, unlikely but I'm really not wanting to drop the pan again

I’ve gone to this thread 2x hoping to see video of you ripping a TREE STUMP from the ground with your v8 Jeep.

I hear you not wanting to drop the pan. Sometimes 2 unrelated things at the same time makes troubleshooting very difficult. Good luck.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but at this time it looks like dropping the pan is the only option. This will tell the tale and eliminate all the what if’s.

Then maybe a crack at the threads?

Thanks guys, looks like no choice but to drop the pan again. Any tips for removing the pickup and strainer pipe and resetting it to the correct orientation and height afterwards? I've also heard that the pump might be sucking the pan upwards to the strainer and that there should be a button or dimple at the base of the strainer to prevent this, has anyone seen this before as there was nothing on the base of my strainer and the new one listed from Rockauto doesn't show anything either? Suggestion is something between 5/16 and 3/8 of a spacer

Research shows a spacer is needed between the pan and the bottom of the pickup screen if a stand-off is not provided with new pickup. Some guys have tack-weld a nut on pickup.

i tacked a nut to the edge of the pickup to prevent this. i would guess the pickup or the screen is cracked or some way leaking. i have a buddy that had one crack on his chevelle same symptoms as you his dropped enough to flicker the oil light under a load.the tube was cracked right at the pump.

Went back to the garage this morning to experiment whether additional oil would make a difference (ie if it got above the crack point) however, when I went to start it this morning there was absolutely no oil pressure on initial start up, I shut it down and proceeded to drop the coil and crank over to get oil pressure, I did get normal oil pressure after cranking and then reconnected the coil and started it up. The interesting thing was the additional oil actually made the oil pressure worse?

Why would the engine have no oil pressure after sitting overnight (had normal oil pressure yesterday)

Why would adding additional oil make the oil pressure drop?

I feel there is something else at play here?

Oil frothing in the sump, when the oil is whipped by the crankshaft.
