Doing a 4.3 swap in my 55 CJ5. Would this be something to consider to throw behind it? It has the 4.3 bellhousing with a sm420/d18.

I was going to use my t90, but after the cost of that converstion it is about the same.. would be a little less work I think to do the 420

whats up with that adapter? Home made? You need the length to clear the U joint. The cost of the sm420 swap is in the adapter. The transmission is 100 bucks all day, but it's old. The newest one is 1968. That one is older than that because no webbing or back up switch. The pre 53 ones don't have a front bearing seal either and gear oil will flow out if parked downhill.

There are a couple different variants, Synchronisers and parts are not was easy to get as some will tell you.

    Driveshaft was rubbing.

Good points Chris. On second look, it does look a little sketchy.

On a seperate note, I'm not a fan of the T-90 behind anything but the 134. If any stronger trans is around the same price to adapt, I'd go with it. But that one does look a little suspect.

That adapter looks like the one I have (Advance adapters 1984 - this has the replacement tailshaft instead of the spud shaft). I dont see how that thick driveshaft could ever clear - we used the small shaft with the v6 joint. I would consider this (No - I would just buy it). When we installed this transmission and the buick v6 we kept the transfer case in the stock position and moved the motor forward of where a stock v6 would be. We removed the grill shroud and moved the radiator forward. Just saying now is the time to work things out before you commit your engine position based on the t90. To me every Jeep should have a granny gear transmission.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Looks like an early AA or Novak adapter. The newer ones are better but the old ones if in good condition are very viable. Check the trans mount bolt holes for damage.
You can’t buy the adapter kit alone for $400. Keep that in mind. If in my area and the trans looked good inside I would buy it and turn it for $700-$800 and it would be a quick sale.
Check the transmission for signs of wear on the gear dog teeth and first/reverse slider gear teeth. Also for any signs of rust.

I would be all over that for $400.
