T-90 Case Damage Opinion Needed

I found some damage (chunk missing!) to the inner boss for the reverse idler gear while prepping the case for a rebuild. I assume it is useless, but I thought I would look for some opinions on usability before I start the search for a new case. Any comments or advise are welcome.

Did you find anything in the case? That looks more to me like a bad casting than damage, may have been like that from day 1.

I agree with Howard. If you didn't find a chunk floating around in the case, run it. Besides, the gear thrust will be against the outside of the case.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    Should be okay.
As long as you're not pulling stumps out in reverse.

Looks original. These were never high tech gear boxes.

These are basically free cases. I’d get a free spare and swap the case. Since you got it all apart, might as well swap it now.

Thanks guys, this is actually a Craigslist case that i am rebuilding so i can swap my current out for the typical second gear popping. I got it with a transfer case that so far is in decent shape. I wanted to be able to rebuild both and swap everything out rather than having the Jeep down while i rebuild everything.I never saw anything chunky in the case although most of the innards were junk except for the cluster gear, that seems to be alright.

That does look like damage that was done by some previous owner. My guess is that a drift was used trying to drive out the idler shaft, and they missed the shaft, taking out that chunk of the case.
I would be hesitant to use that case as it appears that the cast "loop" has a totally been compromised. If just a corner was missing, it would be fine to use.

Dissenter. Here. Replace it. Reverse is weak enough without reducing thrust support for the reverse idler. T-90 cases are plentiful so why intentionally compromise strength when a replacement is so readily available? I'm on my phone so hard to tell for sure but almost looks like additional cracks in that boss. The structure has been compromised.
I would NEVER build that case for one of my customers.

Are the ones you can buy online work buying? I have to replace most of the guys so I may just put it all in a new case too.

t90 stuff is so easy to find I would buy a used oem case and the parts you need. I would buy a new 2nd gear and whatever bearings seals etc you need.

Yea, I’m looking for a better one locally but I’m not having much luck so far. I’m hoping as the weather starts warming up, more parts will show up for sale.

It will. I keep a rolling CL ad with my extra stuff and the hits are in perfect correlation to the weather.

I have at least two spare cases (I’m sure guys here have piles of em) but they arent worth the shipping to you.

All the cores have completely dried up around here. It is actually getting hard to find them as most of them have been scrapped.
