I didn't see the cover when I bought it, but I'll look again. I need to find some of that fluid film as well - sprayed it down good with WD40.

I had to laugh when I looked at the Amazon link. In their link, they show the jack secured with a locking knob to a adjustable tube mount. Of course the tube mount has no security with exposed nuts.

I also always lube it well before use with whatever oil type fluid I have handy before use. nothing good about a sticky hi lift

Trying to get this Jeep a little more driver friendly. My wife’s kids are here for the weekend and I want them to be able to drive the CJ5. Still having trouble with it being “darty” and self centering is almost nonexistent. The steering gear was an EBAY find and unknown condition. So last week I pulled it apart and replaced the gear with “new” rebuild gear from FLAPS. The darting definitely improved but not so much on the self centering.

Next issue was the sensitive clutch. I didn’t have a good cure for the sensitivity but found a good way to make it more “driveable”. I made an adjustable clutch pedal stop. Welded to the frame I can adjust to full pedal or to nearly nothing. So I made it so the pedal goes down just a little past fully disengaged. This makes it lots easier to find the engagement starting point.

"Self centering" is usually a product of your alignment. Specifically your caster and toe-in. If your toe-in is good then you probably don't have enough caster.

The tire shop and my own measurements say real close to 7* castor.
Think I should go to 9*?

It sounds like your in the ball park, 5-7 degrees is what I've always read works best for the old CJ's. 9 degrees sounds like a lot but the caster specifications for the later XJ's is 5.25~8.5... so 9 may not be that extreme. But you would think that 7 degrees would be enough.

If one was a glutton for punishment (which I admit I can certainly be when my OCD gets the better of me) you could machine a basket full of axle shims in .5 degree increments and then work through installing and testing all of them.:D Of course if you have front mounted shackles on your springs, shortening your shackle would also increase you caster so the variables are endless.:banghead:

Lets see a pic of your tie rod and drag link. If your bump steer is way off it will make it dart whenever you hit a bump.

    I might have that.....

But bumps aren't the problem. Is was going 55mph on the State Hwy.

Is that with weight on it and the springs settled in?

It looks like those shackles are angled the wrong direction.

they are better after settling in but I do need to move the spring mounts to get the correct angle. Biggish job I need more than a couple hours for.

Those are angled the wrong way. I don't know what you have on your spring hanger side, but it needs to move forward or your shackle mount needs to move back. That setup is not correct.
