So....im fairly certain my 4wd is broken. I was stuck in a little mudhole. The back tires were spinning, i put it in 4lo and then was still stuck.i had to winch myself out. What if anything can i check to see if something is broken? I dont want to pull the tcase.

Dumb question, but I have to ask...Did you lock the hubs?

If you indeed did lock the hubs, maybe the front driveshaft splines are worn enough to spin? Happened to me before...

47v6 brings up a good point...Is the front drive line turning?

I suppose. Time to get it up on jackstands.

I just had this problem, I had 1 hub that was not engaging due to bent springs. Warn Hub Springs

I found that the sliding gear inside the hub housing was binding due to the bent guide springs. I was able to eventually get it to work but opted to replace the hubs.

2 bits says that 1 or both hubs are not engaging.

Or nothing is broken is another option. Were you by yourself? Chances are the front differential is open and when you put it in four wheel drive only the right front tire was spinning. Getting stuck and then putting it in 4WD is a lot of times too late.

Yep, power always goes to the wheel with the least traction!

easy test . put in 4WD . jack up rear end only . with a roller jack . see if jeep will move

    nickmil In mothballs.

Or put transfer case in neutral, lock in the hubs, and see if driveshaft will turn. If yes something in front is not working. Then unlock hubs and engage 4wd on transfer case and see if driveshaft will turn. If yes transfer case is not engaging properly.

I know it isn't safe, but I was stuck anyways, so I left it in gear when i got out of the jeep to hook the winch up to a tree. the back tires were spinning, but not the front ones. driver or passenger side.
when I get home tonight I will put it up on jack stands. and go from there.

I hope its something cheap and easy to fix.

Maybe it's related to the "pinging" engine issue? :p

So, jeeps on jack stands. I put the hubs in "lock". Driveshaft spins, tires dont. What can i check next?
My warn hubs are brand new, and seldom used since my heep seldom sees off road

The hubs themselves. They may not be installed correctly or the splines are not engaging.

Well, took both lockouts off. They are fine and work as they should when i manually turn them from 2x4 to 4x4
