What am I missing? Jeep is new to me, runs fine, just want to pull distributor and will need to check timing later. Maybe previous owner set timing by ear? I do have manual as you can see from second photo.
    Thanks,
    Mark

looks like under the layer of crud behind your pulley timing mark, just below the two empty bolt holes is the faint hint of the casting marks, slightly different than shown in the manual? May be?

FWIW: I understand the timing cover is a 'durable part', in other words, they can wear out and can be replaced... different suppliers may have a different mark.

Looks like the one I'm running on my 71. It's a later oddfire 231 with a bolt on timing indicator, has the same two holes. Unfortunately I haven't yet found a replacement indicator. Don't think I have a picture of it but I'll look.

The even fire cover works on a odd fire engine. But uses a little tab bolted to those two holes. The challenge is to get the timing right. Even and odd fire use just a tad different position.

From the looks of picture #2 you should be looking down from just to the drivers side of the distributor. Picture #1 looks to be from underneath looking up. Totally different areas of the block.

As was said the two holes in the timing cover are for a plastic timing tab used on the 231. The timing marks will be different than a 225. I would suggest identifying your engine beyond question as to whether a 225, oddfire 231, or evenfire 231.

You can see the top of the fuel pump in both pictures. Both pics are from the driver's side top down.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, gives me more info and some things to check. I'll check engine code tomorrow to verify which I have, I just assumed original 225cid. Also timing cover looks like some after-market ones where timing tab/indicator sold separate, which you can buy (ATP Automotive and TA Performance).

Pics are close to same angle, like pointed out fuel and water pump about same reference point.

Pull the plug and roll around to find TDC. Make a pointer at the line, or where ever you may want it. Use a advance timing light set to whatever you want and set it. Not perfect, but I know it will run and run well

    As mentioned...Make one.

I'd take a piece of metal, bend it and bolt it on using those 2 holes.

IF you put a stock 231 timing marker on it - you have to adjust by 18* as that is the difference. I have one on the Kenne Bell motor in the '51. I made a new mark on the crank 18* off and use that as my timing now.

Ya can always make your own timing indicator, you know. And then you can put it in a place that is convenient for you to be able to read it.

I made an indicator, as was suggested. I should of updated the thread yesterday. Made indicator, marked TDC on #1, took a reading, swapped in new distributor, set to previous reading mark, runs great.

As always, this is an awesome forum for information and ideas. Thanks to all who contributed. The tab is from an old 8-track car player mount that I've had in a junk bin for 40+ years, guess it came in handy.

If you have a dwell meter 34 degrees is the number.. at 650 rpm . idle set a plastic see thru cup of water on the support for the radiator .. when the water stops jiggling ... you have tuned the engine to its specific proper timing

I dont understand Warloch's comment above, about a 231 timing mark being 18 d off. I came across a Buick page listing 5 BTDC oddfire and 15 BTDC evenfire. I just bought a new timing cover that came with a bolt on timing indicator (TA Performance indicator). Is the mark that far off on the dampener pulley due to some change 225 to 231 crank?
