Rochester 2G won't idle and stalls if not partially choked

How much would you recommend I dilute the purple power?

It's really up to you. Sometimes I cover just the white tray, then top off with water to the max line or I'll use PP to the minimum line then top off. Ive used the cleaner for rusty bolts, nuts, screws...Almost anything and everything crusty.

I added wire loops to the white tray so I don't have to reach into the bottom to dig it out when bringing up the smaller parts.

I noticed you stated you had a "glass filter". I assume it is one that you can see the fuel flowing through? My question is if it is a quality one? I had one on my diesel conversion, and had problems. Maybe try a filter change, or take it out of the equation temporarily with a piece of straight tube. Just another thought.

I wondered about this also, which brings me back to the filter in the carb itself. For the OP-- where the fuel line goes into the top of the carb, there is a big nut that screws out of the top and under that is a spring and a filter. This is not causing your problem but just making sure you are aware it is there.

Walt...I'm starting to think he doesn't have that filter? OrangeCJ5 should have noticed it when he disassembled the carb...Right?

Seems to me, a filter problem would show under speed/load, not so much at idle.
The opposite of the situation described.

Yep Pete that is what I said in my post. Mentioned it only because I figured like Focker that he didn't have one in there and that filter is a micron filter which is important to keeping the small passages clear.

    ok, I forget.

Did you try swapping in a known good two barrel carb to see what happens?

Heh, I've got a spare 2G, but I wouldn't wish that evil POS on my worst enemy. It killed an Engine!

    Update:

I haven't been on because I was in the garage. In a singe word. SUCCESS!!!!!

I got the purple cleaner solution and the little HF cleaning machine, tore the carb apart, washed everything 2x, rinsed with hot water, ran a small wire through all the passages and reassembled with all new gaskets.

I think post 56, #5 on my list was the culprit. I think the idle circuit was clogged with old bad fuel and the Jeep was getting zero fuel at idle. I also the the check ball under the spring in the fuel bowl was stuck to the bottom with varnished fuel. It took a shot of air to get that little sucker out!

After the rebuild, I bolted it up and it fired up and idled almost perfectly with the choke open and when it warmed up it was still idling just fine! The throttle is much more responsive now and it runs much smoother at every RPM

I drove it around for about 20 min and then let it idle in the driveway for another 20 min. It finally died so I turn the idle mixture screws out 1/2 turn and turned up the idle screw a little.

Then I drove it around some more, and let it idle some more and this time it didn't die.

It can use a little fine tuning but it's fixed.

You guys are all awesome! Thank you so much for all the help!

    Mike

Awesome...I get to keep my carb on the Jeep!

Seriously...Great commitment and determination. You can clean and clean and think you have it, but the HF cleaner brings it home...I'm sold on the HF cleaner.

Sounds like you found youre problem which is more than many could say lol Iv been fiddling with my carb I rebuilt a second one to try to see if I could get it to run any better. The new one didnt run that great i was a little worried when rebuilding it because it didnt have removeable emulsion tubes like the video i saw on u-tube. I ended up setting it to just a little bit of choke at all times because it liked that. almost covering up the center tubes. when reving it the choke spring loads open so doesnt seem to restrict it much. but runs great now so ill leave it be. The exhaust smell doesnt burn my eyes at idle like it usto
