Are the intermediate steering shafts the same for manual and P/S on a 1971? Going to upgrade to P/S and wanted to make sure before replacing the joints. Also are both joints the same as 72-75 Cjs?

1971 CJ was still a Ross system so you mean 1972-1975.
No the upper joint at the steering column has a Cardan cross while the lower joint at the box has a bellcoupler.

See bell coupler here... Steering Shaft Coupling Kit with Power Steering Only fits Jeep CJ 1972-1986

That's the stock standard setup for the 72-75 Saginaw manual system.
I thought the stock standard setup for the 72-75 Saginaw power system used a rag joint at the lower end.
But the eBay ad says to use the bellcoupler on all post 1972 CJ systems with power Saginaw.

The 1972-1975 CJ's use a solid steel intermediate steer shaft.
The 1976 and later Cj's use a collapsable intermediate steer shaft

OOPS my bad scratch what I noted.... I thought I was texting on the CJ forum

Yeah I doubt that my post is very accurate concerning Commandos.

  5. Looking at my 71 Commando (manual Saginaw) and the box of change-over-to-P/S I got with the 67 (that never happened with the PO of the 67), the columns and intermediate shafts appear to be the same.

Thanks, I didn't want to rebuild the shaft and not be the right one.

Anyone know the part # for the ujoint at the bottom of the steering column. It's not the same as 72-75 CJ5s.
