Finally getting around to putting the input shaft into the transmission.
The original gears seem to have part of the synchronizer ground off so the shaft can be inserted with that side turned toward the cluster gear.
The new gear does not. Is there some other way to get the gear in? Thought were to leave the counter shaft out until the input shaft was in such that the cluster gear could drop to the bottom of the case. Or grind the synchronizer flat on one side like the oem gears are.[IMG]

The 23 tooth inputs are machined with the flat from the factory. The 17 tooth are not. I would not suggest doing it. I've always left the counter shaft out, installed the input and mainshafts, laid the transmission on its side, then used a prybar to gently lift the counter gear in place and slid the counter shaft in. Kind of a pain but it works well for me. I lay it on it's side so I'm not fighting the weight of the main and input shafts.

I think that the Dauntless can use an AA bell housing with standard Dauntless flywheel and Ford T18 with 6-1/2" stick out. In this case the bell housing IS the adaptor. Still needs an adaptor for the D18.

Looks like you've already bought the input gear ... but if it's from 258 truck, this adapter should be right. Adapting the Chevrolet & GM Standard Shift Bellhousings to the Jeep CJ & FSJ Borg-Warner T14, T15 & T18 Transmissions

The '72-75 CJ with a T-18, T-14, or T-15 all use the same bell, and the 6-cylinder J-trucks use the same transmisson and bell except all the J-trucks were wide ratio.

The setup with the adapter will be a little longer, but it's essentially the same as what the '71 V6-T18 CJs got, so it's not impractically long.
