T98 or T18 stock behind a 1971, questions....

Sorry to beat a dead horse, I've been using the search function for the past 20 min or so without much luck or concrete answers. I'm looking at a 1971 w/ a 225, I originally wanted just the flanged rear axle until I noticed in the pictures the Trans is stamped T98 on the top. If it is a 71 and is all stock, would that actually make it a T18? Needless to say, seller won't part with just the axle but if it is a direct bolt up swap for my 67 with a 225 I might consider buying his whole project for the transmission and rear axle and parting the rest.
Any rough estimates on the value of a stock (behind a 225) T98/T18??

    Thanks

Yes if the transmission is in a 1971 CJ with optional Dauntless then the transmission is T18 and not T98.
T 18 was rarely mated to Dauntless powered CJ's while the T98 was mated to CJ's having the Hurricane engine.
If it is a stock NR T18 it will have two adapters for the bellhousing.

Are not the T18 covers also labeled T98?

    nickmil In mothballs.

Many of the early versions with reverse toward the dash were. Very common and causes lots of confusion.

I would expect the first years of CJ with T18 to have both the T98 case and T98 shift tower.
If I'm not mistaken the rear transfer case adapter plate would indicate T18 because the T98 rear adapter plate was for small hole transfer cases.
I heard that some J trucks of that early 70's era were still using the T98 and I expect that they would also have a T18 rear adapter plate.

Damn shame. I can't decide if this makes the whole pile of parts worth buying or not. I wish I didn't want a flanged 44 so bad, it would make it easier to forget

Ken, I believe you are correct, there is the adapter for the t/c. So it prob is a factory T18. Thanks again, your knowledge is always greatly appreciated

Just another thought but if that chassis has been outside like that, absolutely pull the cover on the transmission before forking over the $. Could be full of water.

    seven4eight,
    My oversight.
You stated 1971 and not prior.
So one adapter is considered as being part of the 1971 Jeep bellhousing.
The 1971 Dauntless bellhousing was manufactured by Jeep.
The pre 1971 bellhousings (#9774035) are from Buick and they are 2-2/8" shallower.

If the propeller shafts appear to be unmodified then you can pretty well bet it's an original NR T18.
The transfer case certainly appears correct.

IMHO the NR T18 is not the best for ranging but it is a nice rare find.
This is the ideal running gear for someone who wants to build an authentic Stock Optional 1971 CJ-5.

seven4eight . you never told us what his asking price was . if it was in my neighborhood . I would start at 600 and go from there . that's every thing you would need for a 4 speed swap . interesting thing is the deep 71 bell housing . and the FSM said stock rear driveshaft is 14 1/2" . as mention I wouldn't drop any bills on it without taking top of transmission off .or at least drain the oil . just because it was stored outside

Looks right for a '71 factory V6 T-18 to me. Any more come with it? The floor pans for the T-18 are different, and you should get them even if the rest of the body is rusted out.

Realize that it is a rare configuration, but it also is a close ratio T-18, with a 4.02:1 1st gear. This is not the "granny gear" transmission that Jeep owners often seek out.

Jeep used the close-ratio transmission in the CJ through 1976. After 1971, Jeep offered this optional transmission only with the 232/258 inline 6s, not with the V8. Owners with these transmissions liked them, pointing to the spacing of ratios in low range on the trail. It's a strong and durable transmission, significantly stronger than any of the 3-speeds. First gear is lower than the 3-speed 1st, but not the crawler gear that most people want from one of these truck 4-speeds.

Gotcha, it is the whole jeep and he is asking 1500 for it. From pictures, frame looks like it is cracked /repaired, whole thing looks like it has been sitting outside. Tub looks okay but someone cut some goofy taillights into it, just basically a rats nest of parts. Like Duff said, trans may be full of water. Not getting my hopes up, there would have to be a substantial reduction in price to even consider it.

None as clear as that, when the weather clears I'll see about having a look. Def not worth anywhere north of 900 to me (and thats a stretch), but I'd hate to see it sit another couple of years or worse yet have a rare option driveline like that go to waste or end up in the scrapyard

13-01 defines a T-18. I would not worry about that. It's just the top cover casting that would say T-98; the side of the case of a T-98 always says T-98, so they are easy to spot. A T-18 will say 13-01 or T-18.

JMO - worth saving, if you have the room/time/money to do something with it. $1500 is cheap for everything you need to do a V6 swap to a L134 or F134 Jeep ... plus you get a 4-speed swap in the package.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

that wouldn't last 2 minutes out here at $1500......

At that time the t98 and t18 ( early model t-18's with reverse over and up) were almost identical in terms of main housings and components. So, if the shift lever assy says T98 it still is likely a T-18 with the close ratio gears if it is a factory V6.

Pull the cover and inspect. Iirc there are some subtle differences. The tremac manual for t-18 is a decent approximation for a rebuild guide of the t-98. I made a leap of faith or two. I have photos posted here about my t98 rebuild, that I thought was a t-18... I got great info from folks at Novak, as well as bearings and synchros, etc.

    maybe my photos will help.

Definitely a factory T18. I had one. With 4.88's the close ratio was fine. Worth 1500 all day long if you want a 4 speed.
