1962 cj5 vin number ??

Hello good evening . I am having trouble with titling my cj5 . Is 13 numbers correct for a vin number my serial number . According to cj3 form the first 57548 then 14 then my serial . every one I have seen on a vin plate has left of the 14 . Of course my vin plate is gone except for the 4 holes . Titling dept of Tn found the title once now they can not . I also left of the 14 . The serial number is on the frame up front but not on top above the axle . thanks for any help chris

 

your number should start with 57548 and the rest will be your serial number. Either 10 digits or 11 digits.

There isn't a plate on the firewall top drivers side in the engine bay?

Go back and read the site. The numbers you reference are the 6th and 7th digits of the vin. 57 according to the site you reference should be the first two digits.

 

I don't understand all the discussion about vin numbers. I have two 1964 titles, one is a standard CJ5, it begins with 8305 that makes it a CJ5, then it has six numbers, build number I assume. Then I have a 1964 Tuxedo Park title, it begins with 8322, that makes it a Tuxedo Park or a CJ5A, then five numbers. Then I have a 1966 title and it begins with 8305, that makes it a CJ5 and then it has an A and six numbers. It is a Dauntless V6 model. I don't know where the numbers you are all talking about are. I must be missing something I guess? Rick

 

The VIN "prefix" changed from the 5xxxx to 83xx prior to your year and VIN.

Ha, my title just says "jeep" on it. I bought a "vin" tag from walcks and just stamped that number into it with steel stamps and was done. The DMV here in Washington , D.C., just didn't care. Out of state title for a random jeep with a vin number that was way too short that didn't work on their system anyway.

Other states are different. Arizona made me present my jeep and it had the real and original AZ title for it to be titled and registered. Washington State made me drive it to the state police inspection station in Tumwater. There they did an inspection of the jeep and steel stamped a new VIN tag that they affixed to my frame onsite with a drill and some drive screws. they then ignored all documentation from AZ and made their own up.

Lots of states just ignore titles on vehicles 25 hers or older, or so I've heard.

 

I agree Glenn . Would the title say 57548 14 ------ ? Or would it say 57548 ------. The Tn titling dept found it once . The lady looked up other jeeps titled here . I have read and found so much conflicting info . I will call again Monday Thanks for every ones help, Chris

 

That version of the document is old, there have been a couple revisions since then. They didn't ask me if they could copy it and post it on their website so I didn't even know it was there. Can you navigate to it through the main 3B website or do you need to know the direct link?

Your CJ5 was built October 1961, which would make it a 1962 model year vehicle. I agree with Glenn, it should be 57548 followed by your 6 digit serial number (57548 1378xx). 11 digits total in the identification number.

There have been 10, 11 and 13 digit (total) Identification Numbers in the 1971 and older CJ5s.

OK, I was poking around on the net a little and found a document on the 3B page dated Sept 24 1962 with the model for the CJ5 shown as 8305. I have other documentation showing the change over happened sometime during the 1964 model year. Does anyone know for sure when the transition from 57548 to 8305 prefix occurred?

Edit - The 3B page estimates the prefix change for the 3B's happened around October 1963. This would be consistent with the data I have showing it happened sometime during the 1964 model year.

 

I just picked up the CL diamond plated half cabbed CJ5 and it's a 1961. My serial begins with 57548. 11 digits total, the prefix 5 and 6 for the serial. According to this forum's PDF, my production date was around October of 1960. Sounds right.

 

I went today used the 11 digits like everyone said , gave them 100 bucks done title is on the way . I want to thank every one for the help .

 

Just out of curiosity, is there a large number of unexplained holes in the body? Enough that it could have been used as a fire service vehicle?

The factory Fire vehicles, including the CJ5, had a -14 after the first 5 digits of the VIN.

Yours 'could have', 'maybe' been 57548-14 xxxxxx.

It's a longshot, because normally the last digits started at 10,000 and since there weren't that many cj5 firetruck made it probably would have been 12000 or lower, but MAYBE they pulled it out of dealer stock and sent it directly to the converter?

So is there a "-" before the 14 on the title?

 

They have no record with the 14 as far as holes nothing unusual but the rust
