Another Horn Question

    Finally took the time to pull my steering column to see what's the matter with my horn button and wiring. I've got a replacement button and wire but was wondering if the collar is supposed to be this far down on the column. I thought it is supposed to be up where the metal tab on the plastic piece on bottom of the tube grounds it, hence the wear mark around the collar. I believe it was driven down as I kept yanking on the wheel and shaft to pull it out. Looks to be just enough wire to splice into on the collar. [​IMG]

    It should be up towards the top and should align with the notched opening in the tube.

    Well, I have my horn button rewired, new ground wire from column to horn, and constant 12v power to horn. Maybe it's the horn itself, but I can't get this new wolo horn to blow via button or just grounding it with the wire.

    You have a multimeter? Check the horn terminals for continuity. A horn is like a buzzer - it makes and breaks connection to move a metal diaphragm like a loudspeaker. There usually is a screw that adjusts the contact and change the tone a little.

    But if it does not have continuity to a meter (ie resistance tests large to infinite), it's kaput. Can't have action without a circuit.

    Most of that type horn are polar sensitive. Are you sure you have the hot wire on the + terminal and ground (button) on the negative/

    This horn doesn't have +/- marked, but I swapped the wires with no difference. I measured continuity, and it appears this horn must be bad.

    To double check run a couple jumper wires directly from the battery for both positive and negative to the horn.

    You might be beyond this at this point but mine was losing ground though the U-joint on the steering shaft. I installed a nichrome wire with round eye connectors attached to the pinch bolts to ensure a good connection through the u-joint.
