ID flattie tub

Discussion in 'Flat Fender Tech' started by technologyteacher, Jul 5, 2012.

  1. I recently acquired two flattie tubs, and a rolling chassie minus the transfer case. The owner said they were '47's. What are the identifying factors that can be clues to the vintage of the tubs. By '47 I'm assuming they are CJ2A's but what are the differences in 2a and 3a.

The tubs are currently not at my house but I can get some upclase pics of areas if needed. I did not see data tags on the firewall.

    Thanks

Agreed, no fuel tank inlet on the one MB or GPW, the red is 2A

Bow pockets are not a discriminator between 2a and 3a - I have had them on both. The majority of 2a's have had the tool holders, but not specific to them either.

For me - the main reliable difference was in the cross member mount. If it had ears outside the frame extending below the bottom for the tranny/tcase cross member - it was a 2a.

In reality - outside the windshield, it's really tough to get a firm grasp on the difference between them.

Weren't the rear fender wells different between 2a and 3a? Length?

by bow pockets i meant the storage brackets on the drivers side...

and most 2a's did not have tool indents...it stopped somewhere around 30k ish...meaning first 20k units or so

the wheelhouses are different lengths.but the bow storage bockets are the giveaway..

no tool indents+bow storage pockets= mid 46-49 tub...look for the acm # on the drivers toe gusset..if no number its a late 2a tub..meaning mid 48-49..i think..if number present..post it up

the mb/gpw tub should have a gusset # also..post that up too....but with the later style ford gussetts..i bet its late war..

also the bellcrank is on the frame....see if the motor mounts are inline or staggered..and look on the inside/outside of the drivers framerail near the bumper for the frame tag
