Yeah, my wiring doesn't have a socket for the flasher just the wires with female ends on them the flasher plugs into.

May be the socket the little bulb is plugged into isn't grounded to the case itself.

OK let me get this straight. You installed this unit, and the lights all work correctly? The turn signals work in front & in back. The brake lights work as well. All is well EXCEPT the indicator lights in the unit do not work. Is this correct? I would also like to know are you using LEDs for your turn signal and brake lights or are they the original style incandesent bulbs?

The reason I ask is that some flashers and the associated indicator lights need a certain amount of amperage going through the unit for them to work. I have a few friends who for some reason got ennammered with LEDs and replaced all of their light bulbs in their cars. Then their indicator lights did not light nor did their flasher flash. It turned out that they needed a different flasher in the unit to be able to run the LEDs. If you have a unit set up for LEDs, will it cause these kind of problems?? I do not know!! I have no idea if this is your problem, but you may want to look into it.

Yes all signal functions are working. Yes, the Jeep has LEDs in the rear. The old signal switch indicator light did flash, but was broken in other ways, hence putting in this new one. There is a new in-line fuse that came the signal unit, that I installed between to ignition and the flasher.

The 550 flasher has three prongs "X"=Power from switch (fused) "L"=Load (wire going to turn switch) "P"=pilot (blue wire to indicator bulb). The "P" terminal on flasher can become defective yet the flasher "L" portion still work. Normally the flasher plugs into a 3 pronged plastic (bakelite) base where your wires connect. Turn on your flasher and with a test light or volt meter, see if you are getting power from the "P" terminal. It should be flashing as well. If not then 550 flasher is defective.

I havent read all of this thread, but mine did the same thing. When I took a seperate wire and touched a bolt on the dash and housing of the turn signal, the lights in the unit came on.

Hmm, when the key is turned on I read 12V at both what I think is the "L" wire and the "P" wire comming of the flasher.

When you turn the key ON and the signal switch positioned for a turn then you will hear/feel the 550 can clicking. At this point you will have 12V steady on one terminal and pulsing voltage on the other two terminals. If you don't have power (flashing and/or steady) at all three terminals then the flasher is defective.. Looking at the bottom of the flasher can you will see the letters X-L-P.

Thanks for the help. I was out today and picked up a 550 flasher from Napa, same as that is in the Jeep now. Put it in, now all lights working. I guess this is like you said, defective "P" terminal on the flasher.

When the key is was turned on I was reading 12V at both the "L" wire and the "P" wire coming off the flasher. So I am not really clear on why it was not working, the voltage was there.

    Volts, but no amps.
    It happens.

    Resurrecting this thread...

I have this exact same switch, but no instructions at all. I have done a bit of trial-and-error testing by applying power and testing wires, but I don't want to fry anything by crossing wires or applying power to the wrong wire. (I lost a little of the "magic smoke" already by turning on the emergency flashers with something hooked up wrong. I decided to stop before I did something worse.)

I need to know a few things...

Which wire gets the main power supply? I assume it would be the red wire. I pulled a jumper wire directly from the battery and attached it here for testing, but I doubt that's right. If this is the power hook-up, where should this power come from? Brake light switch?

I determined that the brown wire is the driver's side and the orange wire is the passenger side. What about the other wires?
    I have the following:

    Red - power?
    Black - ground?
    Orange - passenger side
    Brown - drivers side
    Green - ?
    Blue - ?
    Yellow - ?

Finally - I don't understand how the flasher can wires in? I see which flasher I need, from reading this thread - the three-prong heavy duty unit. But how do I wire it? Wires from the switch run to it, then out to the corners of the Jeep?

Thanks guys. Once I get the signals working, I'll feel comfortable putting it on the road for more testing, so I'm anxious to get this done.

Thanks so much - this was PERFECT!!! Everything works just like it should...EXCEPT... I can't get the lights in the front fenders to flash. The ones in the grill flash like they should, but the fender lights will only illuminate (park lights). I just looked at a wiring diagram online and it refers to the fender lights as park lights only. Are these not designed to flash? If not, that's fine, I'll live with it. Just wanted to be sure it wasn't an easy fix before I button everything up.

This is the wiring diagram I'm talking about, which draws a distinction between the grill lights and the fender lights:

    Thanks!

The fender lights are just marker lights. Not designed to flash. They can be wired to though.
