I just purchased a new speedo cable for my 67 CJ5 with a Dana 18 T Case. When I got it the cable it has a diff t case end then the old one. I have attached some links to pics of the old end vs the new one. The cable I purchased looks pretty generic. It hooks up ok to the back of the speedo but not to the t case. Help?

This link shows the original cable end (top) along with the new cable end (bottom)

This link shows the nut that was threaded onto the t case. It looks much heavier duty than the one I just bought but I am not surprised by this.

Any guidance would be appreciated or where I can buy the correct one.

    Thanks again!

    nickmil In mothballs.

The old one looks like the the end for the military speedo driven gears I have in the garage. I believe the bottom one is for civilian applications. Is it possible you have a military transfer case or something has been swapped?

I am sure that it is possible that it's a different tcase. I guess I need to crawl under there and check for numbers on it. I just bought the Jeep a few months ago with no prior knowledge of the old CJ's so I am learning. I am thinking that I may be able to have that old end TIG welded onto the new cable. If I can get the hole cleaned out on that old tip I bet I can make it work. With all that said though I would rather just buy the correct one!

How about just swapping in a civilian drive gear? All the civilian cables that I've seen have the stamped, squared end. If you want it to be correct, that's the correct part for a CJ.

Re strength/superiority of the "military" D18, I presume that any military D18 is just a D18 from the early 50s. The earlier D18s are less desirable than the later D18s due to their smaller 1.125" countershaft diameter. Some info here http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/model_18.htm and in this chart http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transfer_case_gears_grid.htm

I'd contact Herm or R&P and ask about changing the transfer case parts to use the civilian cable. You can replace the core of the civilian cable for about $10, using a kit from the parts store.

For $100, you should be able to buy a used later D18 with a 1.25" countershaft.

Well, I did it. Just paid $55.75 for a speedometer cable. I searched and searched and this was the cheapest price. Bought it from Walcks. I tend to be very OCD and I could just picture me driving around looking at the speedometer with the needle resting at zero and thinking how I wish it worked!! This is my second cable purchase. First one that I paid $16 for now hangs on my peg board all nice and shiny and brand new never to be used. I will say that the difference between an aftermarket CJ cable and a NOS military waterproof cable is night and day. This military cable is one heavy duty mutha! I hope it lasts longer than me and my Jeep for the price!!

Oh, and if all goes well I will be driving my Jeep by the end of this weekend!! Paid $119 to get the title work done and tags on it today, tomorrow will be exhaust and maybe tires. By Sunday we're rollin baby!! CAN-NOT-WAIT!!! :) I have had this Jeep for several months now sitting there starring at me every time I went outside. All my money went to buy a diamond for my fiancee. Now that is complete it's the Jeeps turn! Sorry for rambling but I am sitting at work on a Friday afternoon (2:14pm) bidding my time till I leave so I can get back to laying on my back under the Jeep!

Have a great weekend everyone...Eastern NC signing out!

PS: My fiancee named him "Bones" :) I love it!
