Lifts, Shocks, and Springs

    I would like to upgrade the suspension components of my '72 Cj-5 for a better ride. Until now I was unaware that the early and intermediate CJ-5 leaf springs were different than those on the late model CJ's. So I'd like to ask what manufacturers and suspension kits members here have used and found to be the best, and also which ones have left you dissatisfied (specifically for their early and intermediate CJ-5's). I've already been convinced to stay away from Rusty's. I don't actually have any need or desire to increase the ride height, I just want to improve the ride. My rig sees mostly a combination of paved/unpaved roads and some use in the sand.

    I went with BDS on my 75.. The price was about the same as some of the other high profile manufacterers, and the kit was complete, including shocks.. The springs were also military wrapped.. The install went w/o incident..

    I've heard good things about the holebrook long leaf kits. Minimal lift and better ride.

    Holbrook is the premium ticket, but requires welding of some new mounts.
    Skyjacker Softride is softer than most, fits stock mounts.

    I've had two skyjacker systems(87&90 YJs), 1 rancho system(99 XJ), 1 JKS adjustable spacer system(05 LJ Rubicon), and some mish-mash of old scout springs(72 CJ).
    My current Jeep,'74, has an unknown add-a-leaf, possibly rancho.

    None of them made a noticable difference in ride quality. Only ride height/stance/looks. All were in the 2" range.

    You may notice a difference if your springs are broke or on the bumpstops, though.

    I was reading up on the long leaf conversion as well and will most likely go that route. I don't need left either but rather looking for a comfortable ride.


    If you go that route, I'd sure like to hear about it.

    I can tell you from personal experience the Holbrooks can make a huge improvement. I got to test drive one of the prototype sets in Moab and had a set on the Race Jeep. I pulled them off the Race Jeep when I sold it and am putting them on the '59 '5 when it becomes the next project. I've driven a couple of other Jeeps with them and there is a big difference. You do get more body lean however. Not too bad but you need to be aware of it.

    I got rancho on my 74 and love them. Great ride and went on the first time.

    i put 2.5" superlift super ride springs on mine and I have not had it on the road yet but they are STIFF. I dont think i am going to like them at all. I can jump up and down on the bumpers and it wont hardly budge. I think i will tear the leaf packs apart and remove a leaf or two and shorten some of the others up a bit. I wish i had the money for a holbroock kit or known about them when i put my springs on and i would have gone with them.

    Make sure the shackle bolts are not overtightened. Than can cause a severely stiff ride as it won't allow free movement of the springs. Also, all springs have a break in period. Sometimes it takes a couple hundred to couple thousand miles to really break them in and loosen them up. I'd try that before modifying the spring packs.
