New project! $250 M416....

Been wanting one of these since I more or less completed Old Bill about 6 years ago, but always was turned off by the premium prices I encountered. Finally, this one turns up right next door for $250. Story goes like this. Neighbor is a 'picker', and is constantly finding deals. About a year ago, he finds this in some guy's yard for $100 and promptly drags it home and flaunts it in front of me. Seeing my interest, he immediately offers it to me for $1000. Naturally, I turn him down and call him some very bad names under my breath. Out of concern for my mental well being, I promptly forget about it. I assume that he managed to sell it off because it was never brought up again.

Fast forward to this past Wednesday, and same neighbor knocks on my door, asking for help getting a '70 Chevelle off his trailer. Walk over there, help him with the car, and he shows me around his mini junk yard. Turn the corner, and there sits the trailer, at which point he asks if I'm still interested. Of course, I tell him that depends on what number he's thinking of. He says $250, and I say 'yes' under the guise of 'needing to check with the wife' first. A short while later, I've got the trailer in my yard.

It's a little beat up, but quite workable. No major rust except for surface. Front panel is really hammered, but otherwise, not terribly hacked. Only a few things to complain about, for example, the Lunette ring was torched off and some weird 2" ball hitch was bolted and welded on in it's place. Also, a tailgate was fabbed up. It was actually done pretty well, and I think it will add functionality for me, so not a big deal. Someone added a chunk of channel and a brace to the landing gear, which I'm sure I can remove cleanly. The only other things that I've found wrong is no data plate, and a small square hole torched in the bed up front.

Gonna probably do this up in the same scheme as Old Bill, and turn it into an off road/camping trailer with a lid and lots of stuff mounted to it. I've been itching for some sort of intermediate project for a while, and now I've got it!

    nickmil In mothballs.

Sweet! Keep us posted! If I found a deal like that I'd be all over it even though I wouldn't need it. That'd make a great camp/miscellaneous trailer.
I almost bought an almost pristine 416 about 6 years ago for $750 but realized I wouldn't use it enough to justify the price despite condition.

Question... Will these rims work with tubeless tires?

Once again the jeep trailer section has inspired me to search craigslist for a misinformed owner with a Jeep trailer for sale. I called on what turned out to be an old add. A mostly complete, straight, ding free, only surface rust M416 sold 1 1/2 north of me for $400. Makes me want to stomp bunnies.
