Rear axle outer oil seal

Hello everyone,

I need some help with my rear axle. This is for my 1968 CJ – 5, I thought I have a stock DANA 44 rear axle. 44 is stamped on the differential housing.

I would like to replace my rear axle outer oil seal and gaskets. I ordered the rear outer oil seal and gaskets from Kaiser Willys and was sent the seal and gasket in the picture below. The gasket is the same as the old one but the oil seal is not the same. The inner rubber seal diameter is much larger.

When I spoke the person at Kaiser Willys this morning he told me I must have a different than original axle and that the oil seal they sent me is the correct one for a DANA 44 axle on a 68 CJ-5.

So I am confused, is this the original axle on my jeep and they sent me the wrong size oil seal or is this not the original axle and I need to order a seal for a different axle?

the seal has to slide over the sealing surface on the wheel hub, which is still attached to the brake drum in your photos.
Does your old one slide over the seal surface of the hub ?
If so, then theirs is the wrong size, much larger.
914802 should be the correct part number

 

jpflat2a, 914802 is the part I ordered. Kaiser willys tells me the part they sent me is the correct one for my jeep. What I need is one the same size and shape of the old one.

Can anyone tell me if it is a stock axle or has it been modified.

can you tell me if your old seal fits over the hub as I asked ?
it's possible yours was put together incorrectly with the wrong parts
does the new seal slide over the end of the hub ?
we need to know
I ask because the wagoneers used a small diameter seal 935612
your rear axle looks correct and stock for your Jeep to me

 

if I recall, the 935612 seals on the axle shaft
the 914802 seals on the hub
heck, maybe my memory is wrong.....

 

It fits snug over the end of the axle not the hub. I have several shims, bearing retainer, brake plate, gasket, grease retainer (Oil Seal), gasket, grease protector then hub and drum in that order. Same as diagram Q-3 in the service manual for rear tapered axle.

that all sounds correct to me
only question is why yours has the other seal/retainer, the 935612 ?
you could call and order that or exchange maybe ????

 

Thanks, I will call Kaiser Willys in the morning. I wanted to get some info so I would know what I am talking about. When I spoke to them this morning all the guy wanted to do was tell me I have the wrong axle on my jeep, he insisted they sent me the correct part. I am going to e-mail him the pictures in the morning.

I asked an old friend and trusted Jeep guru about your seal situation.
Understand that originally the 914802 seal was felt construction; later versions that appeared were neoprene; both may still be available. The 935612 has always been neoprene to my knowledge.

his response:

"66 thru early 69 used the seal that sealed the axle (935612) everything prior to 66 used the seal that sealed on the hub (Felt 914802). As long as the hub was machined with the seal surface and likewise the axle machined with a seal surface, they can be interchanged."

 

Jim, your friend is right. It is a good upgrade to use the seal that seals on the axle shaft if the shaft is in good shape in that area than the one that seals to the hub. I upgrade to those in my '59 before I went FF and it really helped seal much better even though the seal surface on my hubs/flanges were in good shape. My leaks in that area stopped. I've found that the hubs generally have enough runout that the seals don't seal to the hub as well as the seal that fits on the axle shaft.

Edit:
I will say the ones that seal on the hub work ok if the hub seal surface is in good shape, if the axle shaft is not bent, and if the hub doesn't have much runout, but the ones for the axle shaft work better in my experience.

 

Hello all,

I have spent the last two days e-mailing back and forth with Mike from Kaiser Willys with no success; he has been doing his best to help me locate this rear axle outer oil seal. The part number on the seal is "National 8676 S". I have also tried Willys Overland. Any suggestions where I can find this part would be greatly appreciated?

The seal on the left is the one I would like to replace, the one on the right is the wrong seal that was sent to me.

Did you try Walck's?

 

if all else fails, go with the other set-up.

 

Mike at Kaiser Willys is still trying to locate the seal for me. If he comes up empty by Monday I will try Walck's. I appreciate the suggestions.

Mine has the same setup. I just checked the box and the part number matches yours. I bought mine at a parts distributor but any decent parts store should be able to order it for you.

Mine has a cone extending into the drum area to direct any leakage back to the drain hole (center bottom hole).

Tell Paul or Rich you want the upgrade to seal against the axle, not the hub.
