I am trying to find out the length of the dipstick and tube. I have a new 1968 CJ5 with the Dauntless v6 225, but it has a dipstick that I know is not the original. Thanks

I'd like to know where to get a " new 1968 cj5":). The tube has 3 little bends in it.So as the crow fly's it's 9 15/16 overall. 9 1/16 from the top of the rib that goes into the block to the end of the tube. The stick is 22 1/2 from the end of the stick to the bottom of the stopper that sits on the to of the tube. Clear as mud, I know. hth.

There were at least 2 different lengths over the production period.

I'm going through this same quandary. When I purchased my 225 the dipstick and tube obviously did not match. I purchased another set so I could compare them. I found that my first dipstick was cut down and hand marked. The second one makes reference to "4 quarts" and I believe that the 225 held 5 quarts so I am questioning if it is the wrong dipstick as well. Both dipsticks are the same length. I'm tempted to just buy a universal dipstick, cut it down and mark it after filling the engine with oil.

Interesting. There looks to be quite a difference in length. Is there two different tubes also??? The one I have is the original one that came on a 68 cj5 with the 225.It is the thinner one in your pic. Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, 2 different tube lengths I believe.

I've seen some 225's that didn't use a tube. The dipstick "flange" sat right on the block. The other style had a tube and had the longer dipstick. There may have been another with a shorter tube but I'm not sure on that.

Yep, some sat right on the deck without a tube, and I have had two different tubes.

I'm with Nick - I have, and have only seen the long tub that comes up about the manifold, and the no tub where it sits on the block.

Mine doesn't have a tube. Short stick, really hard to get to, even harder to find the hole to put back in.

another oddity is the width. My 70 has a narrow stick, when I broke it I pulled the one out of my spare engine and it wouldn't even fit in the tube.

The factory dipstick on my 1971 225 is marked capacity 4 quarts. You then add 1 quart for filter and prime.

Thanks everyone for the help. Mine has a tube that is about 6" long (as the crow flys), with 1 bend. The makeshift dipstick I have (aftermarket, empty the engine, fill with 5 quarts) would be about 22 1/2". I got a hold of a couple parts guys that might have one for me. Thanks Again, I hope to have picks up soon of it. :D

Thanks. I noticed that on the picture in this thread as well. Kind of odd to mark the dipstick as 4 quarts and then put a capacity of five quarts in the manual. Thanks again for the explanation.

dvw86- I hear, the 4 qrts one is correct. but you put 5 qrts in the motor !!, I have no idea why they did such a stupid thing, 4-motor 1 in filter,,,, hell ,I ran just 4qrts for almost 9 years.

    Mine is 23 3/4"
Has 4-quart cap stamped on it and when 4 quarts are in it reads perfect.
    # on it is 1379886.
I am not 100% sure but believe the engine to be pre '68 for sure and probably '66.

Resurrecting an old thread to add some information that might be helpful to others - particularly those with TA Performance timing covers.

Timsresort currently has a dipstick for sale that came out of an early Dauntless without the dipstick tube. The part number on that dipstick is 1352847. I'd intended to buy that one from him, because for years, I've thought that my current dipstick was slightly too long, as it reads about half a quart or so higher than it should with 5 quarts of oil in the motor.

Tim was kind enough to measure the dipstick he's selling. When I likewise measured my current dipstick this morning, I found that it's exactly the same length as the one he has for sale. The portion that goes into the block measures 14" (from the tip of the dipstick to the small metal disc).

On that same Classifieds thread, Beach66Bum posted a photo of the dipstick from the Dauntless in his '66 Tux. I checked, and the part number on his, 1374247, is the same as on mine - so evidently, I already have the correct "to the block" dipstick for a 1966-manufactured Dauntless. The dipstick Tim is selling, though it has a different part number, is also the correct length for the early "tubeless" Dauntless.

The dipstick in my Dauntless was replaced after the original was lost during the engine rebuild. I've now figured out why the replacement reads high - and that I should've figured it out a long time ago.

When the engine was rebuilt, the original timing cover / oil pump housing was replaced with the upgraded TA Performance timing cover. The threaded oil filter receptacle on the new timing cover is a bit closer to the lower radiator hose than the one on the original cover was. As a result, I had to change from using the larger type original oil filter to the smaller, more current GM filter size. Looking at it this morning, I realized that the smaller filter probably has only about half of the capacity that the original filters had, and that this smaller filter capacity is the reason my dipstick now reads slightly high with 5 quarts of oil. The next time I change my oil, I need to start with 4-1/2 quarts, and keep checking and adjusting until it reads full.
