Inside my New T-case

    I got a Dana 300 with short tailhousing for my Jeep the other day, and I'm cleaning it and getting all the junk off the outside of it, and then I took the cover off the bottom to check out how it looks inside. It's not bad, but it didn't have oil in it for a while, so it has a little bit of rust here and there, but nothing bad. Most I can wipe off with a towel and some with just a mild bit of persuasion from a gasket scraper. However, I was wondering if there is something I can just spray in there that will loosen all the rust and maybe I can just hose it out? There is some surface rust here and there inside the case itself too, in addition to on the gear teeth, but it isn't horrible. Anyway, do I just need to keep wiping and scrubbing, or is there a solvent or foam or something that may help me out? Thanks guys.

    Use something like PB Blaster or other penetrating oils that actually attack the rust. WD-40 is useless for this. That will help loosen it up. It won't remove it but will help. Then flush thoroughly with solvent/mineral spirits to get the gunk out. Be careful not to flush the rust and gunk into the bearings.....Plenty of wiping, gental scraping, and flushing definitely helps.
    Check and make sure the "pads" on the shift forks are there and in good shape and double check the clearances on the gears and the endplay on the output shafts also.

    I've used it to dry out a dist. cap. But yea PB just plain works.R)

    I use WD-40 to stop rust on bare metal.

    You can fill the case up with kero, ATF.
    Let it sit for a while, spin the shaft to get it working, dump.
    Then, install it, add a cheaper gear oil in it, run it for a short time and dump, draining all the oil good.
    Then fill it with what ever you use.
    The Kero or ATF will loosen the rust, the cheaper oil will kinda remove it .
    Look closely at your gears, bearing areas.
    If any are "spotted" with black or rust, the chrome harding may be comprised.
    if it's just at the bottom, you should be cool.
