Would the M416 wheel be the same bolt pattern as CJ wheels? Just wondering if I pick up an M416 that has two bad tires could I use two wheels off dad's CJ5 or my CJ2A to bring it home? Would the CJ wheels work on a M416? Which would work better, the CJ5 wheels or the CJ2A wheels? Thanks

If the trailer axle is original...then yes, it should have the same lug pattern.

Two things to watch for are:
Backspacing on the jeep wheels and the left hand lug nuts being left hand thread (at least they are on mine).

IIRC, the lug diameter or pitch is different, and the M416 lug nuts are not tapered as the M416 wheels are hub centric. If you're going to use the CJ wheels you may have to buy some lug nuts if you are towing for very far. This is from memory, and that ain't what it used to be.

Sorry, your absolutely correct on the tapered lug nuts. My memory isn't as good as it once was either!
Lug pattern is 5 on 5.5" for sure, but you would need some tapered lug nuts and remember the left hand thread on the left side of the axle.

We've talked about it here before.

The wheels of a 416 are made to work with a MUTT not a M38A1. Hubs are different diameters, etc.

So, Sparky...are you saying CJ wheels won't work becuse of the hub diameter?

Well, the CJ hub would be larger than the 416 hub, it might work, but if they're to be hub-centric I'm not sure it would. I know 416 wheels will not fit on a CJ, but they will fit the other way around, just not sure if it's a good idea with different styles of hubs, lug nuts, etc.

Like I said, I can't recall all the details, it seems we've discussed it here in the past though...

I mounted a CJ wheel up to my trailer once, but couldn't use the CJ lug nuts. With the flat base on the M416 lug nuts, there was no way to center the wheel on the hub properly. As Sparky pointed out, the hubs are different diameters. I think it may work if you had tapered lug nuts that worked with the M416 lugs. There may be some wheel offset issues as the M416 uses a different offset wheel than the CJ IIRC. The wheel and tire did clear the one time I tried it, YMMV.

I have CJ5 wheels on my M416. They bolt right up, however you DO need to change the lug nuts to the acorn style used on a CJ, and the thread/pitch is different then a CJ IIRC.

My buddy swapped on my CJ wheels with new tires on them when he took it to the UP because the NDT's that came on it wouldn't have made it.

MUTT wheels however will NOT fit a CJ from what I understand.

I will get pictures tonight when I get home.

    Thus it won't fit.

If you have access to a spare set of Dana 27 hubs, they will interchange with the hubs on your M416, same bearings and all. I tried it when I had mine apart a few months ago. the parking brake will not work with this setup but it would allow you to mount CJ wheels to get it home.

CJ wheels, TRUE 32" tires on my M416 with no change of the hubs. The only thing changed was the wheels and lug nuts. My buddy borrowed and pulled it 1500 miles and no trouble.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

Are those early CJ5 wheels? So you needed to get lugs that were or weren't rounded where they touch the wheels?

Those are off my 66 CJ5, I wouldn't be surprised if my my 2A wheels fit though.

The lug nuts are the standard 'rounded' or 'acorn' style lug nuts. IIRC they were 7/16" but I am not positive on that.

my wheels are 16" with a very large center. I put used 8 ply on her about 12 years ago and never looked back except when I was carrying an extra heavy load like crushed granite.
