I am looking at a 58 CJ3B and was wondering about it's value. It is in good condition, starts and runs great. Everything seems to work fine. Also has rear PTO and the front winch that is powered off the PTO. All lights and signals function properly too. Also comes with the steel half cab and canvas half cab. Body has had metal welded into the floors but otherwise looks pretty good. He is asking 5K. Thanks for the feedback.

I agree with $ sink!

But really pics would be nice, but if not available I would say it's probably worth it. PTO winch, runs great, needs cosmetic repairs. Probably worth every bit of 5K but offer them less first.R)

:iagree: Offer some where around $3500 or so and work your way up. Sounds like it is well worth the asking price, but pics would be nice.

I agree with MCSCOTT, start at $3500 and work up. The PTO, Winch and Driveline could be an easy $1000 by itself, and $2500-4000 for the Jeep depending on condition and completeness.

A picture would be very helpful.

Wish I had pics. The only thing that doesn't appear to be stock is the seats. They are from a later model. The steel half cab has already been restored and painted, the canvas half top is in good shape and it even has a back seat. There are a couple of small dents the size of a quarter on the sides and the tailgate is ever so slightly bent (maybe sat something heavy on it). The PTO looks and works great and the vintage winch works great too. Has the original 15" wheels with new non directional military tires. Original green paint with the 4 wheel drive stencil still on the tailgate. Has a rollbar on it now but could be removed for originality. Guy has owned it 10 years and got it from the original owner. Has tons of paperwork too. Just don't see many 3B's and I'm not sure on the value of these.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    like most Jeeps (if not all) it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay;
regardless of what the owner wants for it..

That's interesting, I've never seen a right hand drive 3B. I first thought the photo was backwards, but the "WILLYS" script reads right. Has the spare on the left side too, but still has the gas cap on the left. Old mail Jeep? Foreign model?

It's been said before - what's it worth to you? Have you always wanted a 3B? Let's say you pay close to the asking price, and examine some scenarios.

    - You are looking for something to modify: you're probably spending too much, since you are paying a premium for condition and completeness. Plus it would be a shame to hack a stockish 3B to make a buggy.
    - You want a stock 3B to drive for the next 10 or 20 years: then the purchase price is irrelevant compared to your ownership cost over that many years. Buy it because YOU like it.
    - You've never owned a Jeep, and think it might be fun: you may end up selling it since a stock vehicle like this has limited utility for most people. Then you could easily lose money, since the 3B is something of an ugly duckling. Something like a 4-banger YJ would be a much better introduction to short-wheelbase Jeeps.

The wheelbase of the flatties is really short and the stance is very narrow by modern standards, so be sure you understand the implications of these properties. Plus the drivetrain was built for much smaller tires than are in modern use, so if you're thinking about really big tires, this Jeep is not for you. Although they can be driven on the highway for long periods, you may not have the stamina or the patience for a long drive - depends on your personality.

    hth!

I intend to keep whatever I buy as close to stock as possible. I will not make a buggy out of it. I am a sucker for originality. I like the old stuff the best and I do want it to be a flat fender, but those are very hard to come by in my area. A CJ2A looks better in my opinion, but this 3B isn't bad either.

I would have to say timgr explains it the best way possible. To me, the Jeep would be worth the asking price because I would want to keep it original and only drive it every now and then. For a trail rig, I would look for a cheaper one because for that I would be planning on putting a good bit of work into it any way. Since you like the original stuff, like myself, it would be worth the asking price if you can't get it for any less.

He has now said that he will take $4600.00 for it with all of the extras (steel top, soft top, extra PTO assembly)

Go ahead and buy it. You might regret it later.

Mike means you'll regret NOT buying it (I think).

Have you checked the VIN and frame numbers, etc.? Some value will obviously reside in correctness. I would buy it. Two years from now, you won't even remember what you paid for it and will be happy as a clam that you have such an original piece of history.

Going to get with the guy tomorrow and drive it one more time. I am leaning towards making the deal. It drives real well on the road too. Cruises nicely at 55. Going to go through the drivetrain one more time and then make the decision. Looks like I can't go wrong with it.
