I was watching one of metalshaper’s you tube videos and he suggested making sure the TCase vent is working correctly.

do those things just screw out of the case?

They do if they don't break off in the process. IME, rare that the D18 vents get plugged but I could see that happening if enough gunk collected on top of the case.

This. There are vents with a hex you can get an adjustable wrench on to remove (I haven’t found a standard open wrench yet that fits properly) and some that are simply cylindrical you have to use pliers on to remove which scars the heck out of them. Usually liberally application of brake cleaner from the inside will flush the gunk out of the vent. Most have a wire mesh in them.

To Nick's point - I've only had a couple I was able to fit a flare wrench on as well. Got a better grip when I did, but not common.

Just want to send out a thank you to @Oldpappy

I picked up the transfer case and transmission from him today. Great hospitality and incredible knowledge about these jeeps.

Other than me almost backing into his pull behind trailer, it was a nice visit and I really appreciate the opportunity to meet him as well as begin learning how these things work.

    thanks again, Andy!

You are very welcome, have fun learning about these things, the same way I did by working on them.

The near mishap didn't spoil anything, as almost backing into a trailer doesn't count for much.

I once backed into a big popup camper trailer, and knocked it off the chocks. It went rolling down the drive way, on down the hill, and crashed into my storage barn. Busted a hole in the barn, bent the bumper on the trailer, and jarred it enough the refrigerator never worked again.

    Adventures!

I have a gasket and seal set ordered from debella’s. I decided to go ahead and replace the inspection cover gasket while I’m at it so I removed the cover. Here’s a pic of what I see.

the gears in the tcase I got from oldpappy seems to be tighter fitting than these.

I’ve rotated the shaft and I don’t see any teeth broken or chipped.

do you all see any issues with these?

    Finally getting back to this…

Do I need to put rtv on the paper gasket behind the oil seal?

RTV would work. What I use for stuff like this is the purple Permatex brush on gasket sealer. I seldom use silicone sealer unless I am trying to seal up something where the mating surfaces are rough.

Whatever sealer you use just get the mating surfaces clean and as dry as possible.

What product should I use to seal the splines of the output shaft before I put the e-brake drum back on?

    Thanks for your help.

make sure that big nut is torqued down. Very common for them to be loose and wear the gear and shaft splines

Will do. I’ll check my TSM to see if it lists the torque spec. Thank you for pointing that out. One of the videos I watched just said to get it as tight as it was when you removed it

From what I’ve found in other posts, it looks like the output shaft bolt needs to be torqued to at least 160 ft/lbs. my TSM doesn’t specifically call that out.

    Does that sound right?
