    Hi all,
I have a 73 CJ5…. I’m trying to get a feel for what my diffs, trans and Tcase are:

    it’s a 3 speed (t-15)?
T case shifts (front to rear)
    4H
    2H
    N
    4L
    it’s bone stock….
    Diffs…..(no idea)

The drivetrain options were unchanged 1972-1975.

You should buy the TSM for your year. http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/123064/

Thre is a 1974 TSM free to read and download here https://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html - a '73 is almost identical to a '74.

Which 3-speed depends on the engine. Transfer case is a Dana 20. Axles were 3.73 standard, 4.27 optional. There should be a tag on the axle with the ratio, otherwise you can read the tooth ratio from the edge of the ring gear. For example, "41 11" is 41/11 = 3.73.

Factory axles were model Dana 30 front and Dana 44 one-piece flanged axle shafts rear.

If you have an inline 6 the T-14 3speed or T-18 4 speed transmission was stock. If a V-8 the. T-15 3speed was stock. The 20 transfer case, 30 front axle, and 44 centered rear axle was stick for ‘72-‘75 CJ’s.

Did any of the intermediates with the 304 come with a 4 speed? Cannot remember ever seeing one.

Not as a production unit. One might have been able to order one. I’m not sure on that. Normally only the I-6 was available with the T-18 4 speed and they were 4.02-1 first gear through ‘75. ‘76 could be either 4.02-1 or 6.32-1 but most ‘76’s I’ve seen were 4.02-1. ‘77-‘79 were pretty much all 6.32-1. ‘80 and up the T-18 and T-150 (3 speed) was replaced by the SR-4, T-4, T-176 4 speeds or T-5 5 speed. The T-176 is medium duty and not a terrible transmission although I’ve seen several with broken mainshafts right before the transfer case splines. Generally because of abuse. The T-4 and SR-4 were too weak. T-5 if maintained well and not driven hard was ok. Add more hp and big tires and it’s a recipe to break parts.

Considering only the T-18 4-speed, I have never personally heard of a production T-18 with a 304 V8 in a CJ. Possible the 304 V8 was available with the wide ratio 4-speed that Jeep offered 1977-1979. The power train table in the 1979 TSM confirms available in this one year (not '77 or '78), but the parts book does not confirm it that I can tell. You would expect different propeller shafts V8 vs 6, but I don't see any such distinction. There have been reports of such Jeeps here, maybe '79s? Or model 90s?.

Definitely no T-18s with V8s in CJs '72-75. I am sure of that - I was there full-time at a factory and racing hotspot and I would have seen/heard about it.

Customers with the '72-75 258/T-18 combo liked it a lot. The dealership offered to upgrade my first (258) '75 CJ-6 with a T-18, wide or close ratio, using all factory parts except the rear driveshaft. I was young and foolish and not into spending the money at the time. Note that the wide ratio T-18 used in the 258 J-truck is identical to the close ratio T-18 used in the '72-75 232/258 CJs and '72-73 Commandos, except for the ratios.

According to Jeep, the close-ratio T-18 with the 4.02:1 1st continued through 1976. This uses the same bell housing as the '77-79 wide ratio T-18s, but of course has a unique input shaft. Thus it's a one-year variant. The wide-ratio transmission could have gone in with no changes, but the parts book rules that out.
