Decided today's project would be to fab up some rocker panels and get rid of the cheesy running boards that were mounted to the side. Here's the progress so far. (Dan was my chief grinder :) )

black, it just looks better. are you going to put nerf bars on there to help keep trees and rocks off the body more and add a step.

Thought about it Jeff. Not sure just yet. I have everything but the round tubing. I do have exhaust grade tubing, but not roll cage grade tubing...

I think I'd need the heavier stuff if I'm going to do it. I do have 1 1/4" square tubing. I'll see how that looks.

So for the lone vote for red....keeps the Jeep looking classic and simple.

I'd just use regular sch. 40 pipe if you are gonna make some steps. DOM would be way overkill and not to mention expensive for some simple steps.

Or you could do like I did and take a length of 3/4 to 1" black iron, cut a 1/4 out of the length of it and then weld it to the bottom of the rockers. Clear as mud

I like the looks of your Joe, but with the flux core, the welds wouldn't be as nice looking as I'd like.

I've decided to leave them as rockers and not put a step on them. Just trying to get a feel for color.

Here is a photo of the day I painted speedy (can't see the rust ;) )

And a photo of the passenger side new rocker. Dark enough where you can get an idea of the black

red and black are a classic color combo.

the black will acentuate the red ( did i just say that?)

Not many voters, but I went with flat black. Doesn't look too bad either.

Anyway, I built them obviously with 2" angle and 3" flat stock. I purposely welded the backside of them as the flux core would have left a terrible looking seam. The seam was in the perfect spot, right at the height of the flare in the fender. I couldn't have planned it any better ;)

    Here's the finished product.........

very cool. I really like the bodyline between the angle and flat stock. Makes it look like it was original to the jeep the way the lines fit.

Did you bolt them on through the body or are they welded to the sheet metal?

Btw.. my vote for color is red as they are, but if you have any plans to add fender flairs or whatever that rubber molding is called, I would change my vote to black. As pictured the red would just blend into the truck and keep "a classic look" The black offset to me looks like a repair unless it follows all the way up the fenders and out to the bumpers.

just my opinion. Either way looks much better than the rust. Nice job.

Oh one other question to those with something similar. If they are bolted on and not welded, does water get trapped in between the body and rocker to cause more rust? Do you put any silicone or rubber gasket material in between?

Looks excellent! Very profesional and I dig the seam! I too want to know how they're attached?

Before I had nerf bars I went and put some 4" angle iron on the sides. Its still on there weighing down the jeep and trapping all sorts of mud and debris. One of these days I'll pull them off.
