Transfer Case Drive Gear

I need to torque the transfer case drive gear after mating my T90 to my D18. Service manual calls for 130 to 170 lb-ft. Where should I hold (without destroying anything) to torque that nut to such high value?
    Thanks! IMG-20200126-WA0010-1032x581[1].jpeg

I think I strapped mine down around my benchtop and had it set-up so the torque wrench handle was out in front of the bench and around the 4 oclock position so that it the applied force was downward and the passenger side of the TC would be levered into the bench. You could also bolt it to the engine first and do it underneath - I've done it that way as well, but its a bit more goofy to install an OD if that is the case - but not a huge issue.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about damage, as long as you don’t mar any critical surfaces with clamping pressure. You won’t apply forces anywhere near what it’ll see in everyday use.

If you've got the top cover off the transmission, you can put it into two gears at once to keep it from turning.

I meant to hold it so it would not spin when I torque it. I have to transmission cover installed, but I guess I could remove it and lock it there. Any other alternative?

You could try a large pipe wrench on the rear output flange with the transfer case in High. Or even bolt a large bar or 2x4 to it using the flange bolt holes.

kind of realized that after fireball posted his comment....I did the transmission into 2gears so it locked in place. You could put a clamping mechaninsm on the output yoke of the TC (or front yoke if its in 2wd)....I think I used a block of wood and a pipe wrench on the output yoke...of if its in place under the jeep, you could mount the driveshaft and block the wheels....If I did it today, I would probably get a second set of hands and have someone put a yoke wrench on the output yoke...I made one when I did the locker install:

Ok, I will use my yoke tool on the TC, then. That sounds better. Thanks a lot!(y)

It would never occur to me to do that, but thinking about it... of course that will work. Clever, I like it!

Enough to hold over 130 foot pound?

and a few other things . used to change gears on big production machines

Enough to hold over 130 foot pound?
yes just ball/roll rag up before getting it stuck in gears . and you have to turn things backwards to remove rag

I've used a thick piece of canvas stuffed into the gear mesh many times to break this nut loose or tighten it, basically the same idea that Ron suggested.
That case looks like it cleaned up nice!

I cant beleve it needs that torgue. It just has to hold the gear in place. The gear it self is on a spline shaft.

I know! And on top of that it has a cotter pin. Maybe it helps to reduce backlash on the TC?

I did put the transmission in two gears the same time so that locked the transfer shaft. I just torqued it normal. I locked the thread with a punch. so it wont get loose. Holds for a year now. Just checked it last month. I dont have a cotter pin???

It does not affect the back lash

On a 62te trans one of the side transfer gears gets torqued to 200 ft/lbs and then the nut is staked. If you dont stake it the nut will loosen and drill thru the side cover.
