X2 on original cables being twisted wire sheath. The ones covered in plastic are replacements, at least up to around '68.

Mechanic at the Jeep dealer way back when kept a pump oiler full of half solvent - half motor oil. Squirted everything that might squeak when cars came in for routine service, door hinges, hood hinges, bushings, esp. the leaf springs. Prevented complaints about miscellaneous squeaks. Customers liked it; they'd comment on how thorough the service was. You could give the cables similar treatment at service time. Only down-side I'd think is how the oily residue picks up dirt and grit over time. You could go after the grime with the same oil can and rinse off the dirt. Pick up the excess with a rag.

Also - in my state, if there's a parking brake, it has to function at annual safety inspection. No bricks allowed.

Sorry folks - I can't seem to find how to start a new thread. I'm looking for a source for the clip on the e brake backing plate that holds down the shoe lever spreader cam. I circled it in red in the attached pic. Thanks for any assistance.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I don't show it listed separately, part of the backing plate in the parts manual.
But those do come loose and brake off.
Maybe somebody is re-popping the pin and clip ?

    Penetrating oil works good.

I put a Novak kit in my transfer case, and all new parking brake parts, my parking brake worked for a while. Then after a while it started slipping, a little, I read about putting sealer in the spline. I took it all apart and cleaned it all up with Brake Cleaner, sealed the spline, put it back together, and now it will lock up and hold my Jeep, no problem. Good Luck

Sealer in the spline. Can you elaborate on what spline?

    nickmil In mothballs.

It's common for them to get loose and sloppy so I center them up and weld them in place. Problem solved.
