Guy near me has an old jeep on CL.. I really just want the top.

"Has some rust, mainly surface. Doors are good glass and all. Top has cracked glass in the rear. I'm open to offers"

What kind of top is it, how does it look, and what would you offer (considering he is asking 750 for the whole jeep (no title))

    Thanks!

He is probably looking at the top to sell the jeep. The jeep itself may have a few parts that are usable but not running and no title it ain't much. Don't know anything about the top, sorry.

I vote hold out for something better.

I do like the wheels and tires tho.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

If the rest of the top components are there, in decent shape, and it's what you want or are looking for, then make an offer.
    $400 ?
    Walk away if rejected.
There's probably better out there anyway.

    Yeah, I'd look for a '70s Meyer.

ALA taillight? According to the 3B page, only the earliest CJ-5 came with ALAs. http://cj3b.info/Dating/Taillights.html Maybe there's more value there than you think.

I recognize that tire tread, but I can't recall the tire's name. Very popular in the '70s.

I won't touch this, waste of time and what to do with the Jeep afterwards. I have a Meyer top with doors, it is becoming a hap of rust if no intensive care. Try to find one in good condition, pay for the transport (it is heavy, maybe 300 pounds with doors) and enjoy.
If you find one, you must check before the existence of the parts to fix on the windshield and the body.
Because of the weight it is a choice to always keep it or not. I prefer without, but in winter it is nice, nicer than canvas except if canvas is well hermetic.

Three of the tires appear to be Gates Commandos.

There ya go. I recalled Gates but I could not remember Commando.

I was second guessing myself about Commando, decided it had to be right. ;) They definitely had a following for a bit.

The top appears to be a Koenig. It's just like the one on my 3B. The small side windows slide forward for ventilation, but I cut that part out and just enlarged it for visibility. I think I'd offer $200 for the top if it is all there. The drawbar and hitch on the Jeep is easily worth $50, looks like the windshield frame may be in good shape. The grill is from around '69 or '70.

In the second picture on the side towards the bottom and near the front there is a dark spot which is either where the I.D. tag was or is. Looks like was. If you want the old school look then that top definitely has it. If you want a nicer top with better visibility then as suggested a Meyer would probably be the better choice.

What's the last year model top that would fit a early CJ5 like this?

I agree with Glenn that it's a Koenig. Same top was on a '56 I had. I kinda like the small back windows myself but it's true that visibility in a Meyers is much better. I cut mine to make a half cab. Another project I never finished and may never actually use. I was bored and the back of the top was munched.

    Rear windows slide, I think.

Offer him 500 for the whole shooting match if he has the doors and rear hatch, and sell the stuff you don't want. It will at least keep it from the scrap yard and maybe help some folks get parts they need.

I may have some of the hardware for the rear hatch if you need it. It'll be rusty but maybe you can salvage it.

Things are pretty much the same from '55 to '71. That top may still fit the intermediates though '75.

Judging by the front spring hangers I would guess that is a 55 as I think Timgr is also suggesting.

Why not just build your own? Those pre-built ones weigh in at up to 500 lbs. Building outa exterior plywood probably would weigh in at the same.
