2.5l Pontiac/iron Duke Engine Mated To A T98a

guys,
my father in law gave me a 2.5 Pontiac/iron duke motor, and now that I have a motor on hand, I think I would like to swap out my 134 F head. I know that they are both inline 4 motors, but the iron duke has a lot more aftermarket support than my tired Fhead.

anybody have/has done this combo before?

what adaptors are needed?

 

Does the 2.5 use the standard Chevy bellhousing pattern? I'm thinking it does which means you would need a Chevy bellhousing, a common adapter and install a longer input in your t90 to make things work. Engine mounts should be fairly easy to fabricate

 

Yes, a T-90 would be easy.

With the T-98, I'm guessing this is your only option - 712512-T98 : T-98 Transmission to Chevy/Buick Engine Adapter (New Input Shaft) | Advance Adapters

I believe the Chevy-style bellhousing is deeper than the F134 bell, so you'll need the new, longer input shaft.

Keep your t-98 with your f-head and mate an SM465 to the Duke.

Or sell it to fund the adapter.

I'm not a fan of the Pontiac puke engine.

 

Ouch. Pontiac puke! The duke is just a motor siting around that the fatherinlaw wanted to get rid of. T98a isnt going anywhere

 

I had a 1980 CJ5 for a daily driver back in the late 80s, it had an iron duke. It was a strong, dependable little engine. AMC even put the " Hurricane" label on it. Only owned it for a couple years though while I was working on the 71. AMC stopped using them in 83.

 

We bought a flatty for $200 years ago just for the OD that had a duke in it. That thing ripped. It almost killed me.

 

Early Duke had chevy bell housing like v8's. After that they had the metric bell like chevy 2.8 v6 and FWD gm cars.
If the Duke has a flywheel, maybe. Otherwise you'll spend more trying to find parts then its worth.

 

I have one in my DJ, 1969, gm 153 with a power glide auto, same driveline as a chevy nova of the time, that's how I always look up parts.

The 153 cid "Chevy II" engine that Geoffrey has is not the Iron Duke. It is a 4-cylinder version of the contemporary and very conventional Chevy 230 cid six (2/3 * 230 = 153), with the intake and exhaust on the same side of the head. The engine that Jeepstar has and Jim remembers so fondly is the GM/Pontiac inline 4, a cross-flow design like the 2.3L Pinto engine.

 

No the iron Duke is a 151 Pontiac.
The DJ used the far superior GM 153 engine 9same as a Chevy II or Nova0

Wow, I always wondered if the Chevy was an Iron Duke, you guys just answered all my questions. I know the Chevy was used in a lot of boats, and in Hydro Plane racing. I had a manifold for a Chevy with four Dillorto?, carbs on it for a Chevy four, as Garage art, sold it to a collector friend for his Man Cave.

 

The 153 is not the 151, but NB both engines were used in DJ models, as was the AMC 150, among others. See the Wikipedia link above.
