The few people who know what it is... I doubt they’re the ones I’d need to worry about.

 

I asked if she’d want a rifle rack in the Jeep.

I'm currently in the middle of straightening out the tub for bed liner and new seats and such on my 56', and I made this discovery of what I had to work with for the passenger seat frame-

uh oh.

PO decided to botch the (rare, hard to find, expensive) seat frames to stick some fullback CJ7 seats in. His creation simply has hinges at the front that bolt into the toolbox, and then the sliders. And that is it. I don't particularly want to spend the money to buy original frames, as the whole jeep project is just to make it fun to drive, not restore. I was wondering if anybody had advice for what to fab up here, as well as how the passenger seat is actually supposed to attach at the back of the seat, as well as if anybody could give me the proper height from the front of the seat frame where the seat bolts to, to the top of the toolbox.

 

Did it work well before you took the seat off?

No, the sliders sit at a funny angle with the new low backs in, because the CJ7 seats are deeper, and the way these frames were built, makes it so the back of the seat is what hits the "stop" on the wheelwells. It also sits at a significantly lower height than the drivers seat.

I believe that this would still work if I added a spacer of some sort between the slider and the rail that rotates, and would change the area that the new seat hits the "stop". I am just looking for the correct height to the mounting hole to see how much material would need to be added below the slider.

 

If your "new lowbacks" are Smittys, I simply made frames like this for my '56 that look just like the OEM base. The passenger side fits in the original pivots.

The answer to height is to set the rear as low as possible. Then shim up the front with spacers to give a comfortable angle. The distance under the steering wheel is the controlling factor.

I see no need at all for a slider. Even all the way back is the minimum for legroom.

 

I currently have my passenger seat out. Here are pics of what my frame looks like and how it attaches. As for the rear, it doesn’t attach to anything at all. There is a post that sticks down on the left side and rests against the bed. On the right side, the frame rests on a little metal bracket bolted to the wheel well.

Yep. I don't have any documents for the Utility Wagon, but the early Wagoneer is similar.



The bracket is the mount for the arm, somewhere on the frame or body.

 

I thought it looked striking similar to a commercial door closer arm & pivot shoe ? Oh well , wrong again Pumpkin !

 

Still new here so not sure if there was a better thread to put this in- apologize in advance.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with what the factory rear bumper looks like on an early CJ5; but my 56 has had a rear bumper fabricated by a previous owner, and I noticed underneath, something that looked like what I thought the factory rear bumpers were. Out of curiosity, could anybody tell if this is the factory bumper that has been built over?
